Matt
I decided that a picture at the bottom was enough. Its a lot more imposing when the hill is covered with snow.

Warren, it looks like you will be abe to take out your toy up until New Years day with our upcoming weather!!!
I agree about the use of a remote mike to capture those glorious sounds.

Warren,
I've got a StickyPod on order, just selecting a Digital Camcorder now. The Sony model has an optional wireless mic... where would you put the mic for the best sound? Under the hood? On yourself for the driver feel?

This should be fun...

Jay

I'm not sure where the best sound of the motor would come from, but let me throw something out.

You want the best place that ELIMINATES any sound other that the motor. Therefore, it must not be subjected to wind noise. Thats the biggest offender. The second biggest offender are the idiots that add some stupid record to the video. I hate those guys. But I digress.

Therefore, best places could be ...

under the dash
behind the windshield by the rear view mirror
inside the glove compartment
in the trunk.

I'm wondering what it would sound like if you attached the remote mic to the side exhaust, close to the exit. Might be nice ... probably not.

If you were to put it in the engine compartment, I'd make sure it was fastened securely ... lots of hot stuff to melt a microphone.

I'm waiting for your first video, even if its snowing outside

Of course, the worst part of a ride is going home to the garage ...

Anyone notice that on January 7th my garden hose is still connected? WOW. One of these days I'll fix that brake squeel ... only happens occasionally.

The great sounds are compliments of Olthoff Racing. Here is another short clip I took yesterday.

Brake squeal happens with dust buildup, dust buildup occurs from using the thing, that's good! Bonni says your having more fun with that car than most. Good on ya mate!

No wimp involved. I call it cardiac survival. I already had two heart attacks, don't need a third.

The very cold weather causes the body to close up shop and that makes my heart pound harder.

Warren,

I did checkout last night the previous page after I posted. Ever since I saw "Rendezvous" I really love the film verite of riding in a cool car. So I can see where you want to place a mic out of the wind and get the exhaust blast. If you have seen "Rendezvous" (which I bet you all have) the tire squeal is interesting too. Of course in that 12 minute film he averaged something like 120 MPH on the streets of Paris one Sunday morning. Don't try that in that small town!!
Really great vid's overall, though. Thanks Warren.

Trey

Tru
It was 70 ºF outside during the last ride! Standard "summer" hat and NO gloves! Lovin it!

Pouring rain today ... maybe I'll skip putting the rubbish out until next week. Need an ark soon. But forecast is for sunny sky the rest of the week, low 40's (brrrr), but mid 50's on Friday.

By the way ... what are the titles of your books?

Fred - I've had my new avatar up for a week and no comment from you yet! Do I have to go back to the boring Cobra shots?

At Lime Rock last year I met Dan Cook from Piston Productions which produced the following CD, includes a number of Ford engines:

http://www.thegreatv8s.com/

I contacted Dan , provided the link for this Thread and asked for his comments regarding recording audio from an auto:

Getting a camera with an external mic jack is important. When it comes time for a mic, I use Shure #sm58 models, they are inexpensive, tough, and work well for these applications. Also having a good wind restrictor (fussy thing on mic) is important. I try to locate the mic in the passengers foot well to eliminate wind buffeting. Sometimes it's just trial and error with these things.

I have also seen references to " DAT " recordings ?

The CD recordings for " The Sounds of Goodwood " and " Into the Red ", in addition to the mics in the auto, stationery mics were set up on the track to hear the auto approaching, then directly in front of the mics and finally the sound diminishes , both at full throttle and accelerating in different gears.

" Into the Red'" by Nick Mason and Mark Hales, published by Virgin Books, ISBN 1 85227 225 2. comes with a CD of sounds, some of which were used in " The Sounds of Goodwood ". However, in the past , the CD came with the book only if it was purchased at Amazon UK, not US, not sure if the CD is still included. " The Sounds of Goodwood " CD is no longer available.

After 3 weeks of below freezing temps, it finally got all the way up to 38 ºF this afternoon. Of course, the forecast is for a major snowstorm on Wednesday.

So today was time for a 45 minute ride. Great for HP, terrible for traction.
