Default Windshield

Dang! Took a rock in the windshield yesterday. Ugly! Will be ordering a new glass from Hillbank.
Anybody know where to go to have it installed?

Jim,
I know Duane had his replaced. If he doesn't see this you might message him and ask.

Pretty easy to do it yourself. Just remove the screws from the mounts, lay flat and remove the screws holding the frame together. Carefully remove the frame by using a putty knife between the glass and the gasket (do not try to remove the gasket from the frame unless it does it by itself! The frame is easy to bend so be careful. Get a new gasket and apply to the windshield, and use a slight amount of lubricant to make it easy for the frame to slide over the gasket. A rubber mallet can be a big help to get things started but once it starts it'll go pretty easily.

When removing screws be sure to mark put the screw back in the hold they came from and do not overtighten. If the screw can penetrate the gasket and touch the glass then it will break again.

Mine took about 45 minutes to do the swap. An extra set of hands to hold things steady is a help.

Jim - If that doesn't work, get a bigger hammer!

Thanks guys for your response. Tony, it does sound pretty easy. I do have a rubber hammer and a putty knife. Is there no messy adhesive needed?
Phil, I also have a 4 pound sledge that I occasionally will take to things that frustrate me. Maybe in this case I could use it to make removal of the old glass less tedious.

Hey Jim,
I just saw this. After the 2nd one on the black car and another one on my blue car years ago, I finally caved in. No more glass. Ended up going with a lexan type version, and literally one day after I installed it a huge truck threw a giant rock dead center at my face. Put a little spec on it, and luckily no issues since. Dan and a few others have done the same. They are a tad wavey looking from the side, but more clear looking through. I use quick detailer on it with a microfibre towel to keep it clean and no scratches. Actually forgot about broken windshields. Sorry, not sure about local installers any more.

Thanks for the info Duane. I've noticed that a lot of folks are going with lexan. Something to consider for sure. Thanks again.

Missed this in the unread before. Mine had no adhesive, but the rubber gasket will stick a little to the glass. I recommend getting a new gasket rather than trying to reuse the old one.

I made a lexan windshield for my other car. I paid under $100 for a piece big enough for two, from Home Depot or Lowes. Was certainly easy enough, once I learned to not use a jig saw. A band saw or table saw works much better. The plastic just wanted to melt back together with the jig saw. Having two people really helps bend the lexan windshield so it can be screwed into the frame holders. I used a water spray with a drop or two of dish soap and mirco fiber cloths to clean. Ran it for several years with never a crack, chip or problem.
I've also read about new Polyglass windshields that are very resistant to scratching. Wipers can be used (not with Lexan) and their surface is so slippery that no RainX type coating is needed. (BTW, RainX doesn't work on Lexan, Lemon Pledge does).
Or, you, or your insurance company, can pay close to $600+ for a glass windshield that will break eventually.
One thing to consider is that neither Lexan or the Polyglass windshields are DOT certified, so there may be problems, if you car has to undergo state inspections. Your call.

You don't mean # 318 do you? If so, I truly never noticed. Wow!

Really Jim, didn't notice?

I was going to make him a low ball offer until it went tits up.

Sorry Maurice, I couldn't resist... always going for the cheap laugh.

Wow! I guess the snarl of that vicious FE in # 318 blinded me to everything else.
I miss that sound.

Jim, do not take it to the guy in the back woods near Grass Valley. There are different size screws in the side of the window. He put the wrong size screws in and the window cracked again after 300 miles. Sorry, don't remember his name. I just remember he was way out in the woods. He would not stand behind his work.

Hey Jim, I broke my Superformance windshield a few years ago. I bought a poly-carb (lexan type) from Cobra Valley. It fit perfect. I did it myself and it was a pain in the a$$. ED

well, keeping WSCB stickers in tact is important, even if it meant having to run around with a few cracks in the windshield for an extended period of time. Or, that's what Man of Few Words told me once.
