WSCB recap (Blown Engine)
Well we made it back from the WSCB in one piece and had a great time. The bad news is that while finishing my last lap of my third track time my engine grenaded! It was a very bad sound and it appears one or more of my rods broke and a probabable cracked block. On the bright side, I had the time of my life turning some fast laps with GT 40's, Coupes, and Roadsters. It was amazing. I have already talked with my engine builder and now I have to decide if I am going to do another 460 or do a stroker 521. I will have a stronger bottom end with H-beam rods this time and will have between 550 and 580HP.

Jake, sorry to hear about the blown engine. I was at WSCB track side and cringed when I saw you coasting to the shoulder with that tell-tale blue smoke and trail of oil. We were just hoping you trailered your car there!
Best of luck and hope to see you next year at whatever the sucessor event is.
Matt

However, you broke it magnificiently! And what better time (story-wise) to have it launch.

Good point Jamo. What could be better than doing it in front of a large crowd at what looks like the last bash for a while. I have to mention that I don't have much to compare the bash with as this was our first one. However Duane and the crew did an amazing job organizing this event. I am very sad to hear that it has run its course. On a side note, it was fun running with you in the (BLUE) group Jamo.

Jake,
Hope things go well with the repair/replacement of the engine. Made me sick to see it happen, but glad you were able to get the car stopped OK.

Not trying to take advantage of your situation, but I have a brand new 550HP, 460 crate motor sitting in my garage if you are interested.
My daughter and her husband are buying a house, so I would like to sell it to add a little more to their down payment.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. That explains why I didn't see your car Sat. night at the show. Good luck getting your car back on the road quickly. We have such a short cruisin' season.

Rpm's
Hi Jake,
Sounds like i missed a good time this year.
The stroked big blocks are hard on bearings as the piston speed is way up there. If you like your RPM's then I would stay with as short a stroke as possible; 3.85 " for the 460. Another idea is to put a 429 crank in it for less stress at high RPM's, add billit rods also.
Good luck,
Perry.

460ford.com
If you don't know about this resource already, take a look at 460ford.com :: Index. I'm ByronRACE on there as well, and there's a lot of pro builders on there as well as a lot of very knowledgeable racers.
I've spent several years doing the research and learning about the 385 series. If you'd like someone to bounce ideas against, feel free to call on me. I don't consider myself an expert in anything, but I am well read and have had my nose buried in that forum for the better part of 8 years.
Oh, and I have a couple of pristine production blocks sitting in the garage, and a lot of contacts...
Sorry to hear about the mishap, and really glad it was on a straight. Oiling the tires is no fun, but it's even less fun in a corner.

Jake, Sherrie and I were really bummed about the misfortune...could you tell with my ribbing?
Seriously though, it is a bummer, but I suspect that like all Cobra guys, you were thinking about a next engine all along. I won't tell Kim. Come to think of it, are you sure you didn't pop it out of gear and just gave it the gas down the straight to grenade it in front of her?

Keep us posted as to what exactly happened and why. Big blocks are tough engines.

Jake, you owe me a beer, (seriously) I was in the next group and missed my track time due to cleaning up the oil. Had a fun day though. Sorry about your engine. I like Guiness-John

John,
Sorry about the oil on the track. I really do feel bad about the loss in time on the track. I may have just saved you some money. You never can tell, your motor may have let loose or you may have crashed your car. Everything happens for a reason . I know it sucked sitting in the hot cars staging with all your gear on. For that I apologize. As for the beer....how about the 2009 WSCB or if you head up to Puyallup I can see what I can do.

Wish I could have made the trip. I am excited about your new motor. If you need any help removing old motor let me know. We could have a club work weekend and get that engine out. Let me know.

Jim, thanks for the offer. I may need a hand yanking it or dropping the new beast back in. I will keep you up on the progress. I made pretty good headway on it today. The only tuff thing I have not done is pulled the header bolts. This is proving to be a less then a fun task. I know that putting in a SB would make it easy, so please do not go on any tirades .
Once the headers bolts are loose I think I could have it out in about 2 hours.

Jake, I saw the smoke and oil. Glad to hear that you are positive about it and there was no body injury.
