These are the stories I love to hear! So you were actually there? I did a lap of Sicily a couple of years ago, and was in awe of just being on the same roads the Targa was run on, the same roads that legends like Dan Gurney and Bondurant raced on. Thanks for the great pics Tim.
Cheers!

Two details I find interesting:
--- 000000 miles on the odometer, which is not too surprising as it is a race car after all.
--- A pad on the clutch pedal ... but not on the brake pedal.

Would a pad on the brake pedal make heel and toeing harder? As you 'roll' off the side of the brake pedal, a grippy brake pedal would probably be less smooth and less controllable.

CSX2323 is presently in Irvine, California and has been owned by the same person for several years. It was restored at the Shelby museum in Denver, Colorado.

'64 Targa Florio
Coincidentally, was reading about the ’64 Targa Florio a couple of days ago in Friedman’s and Christy’s ‘Carroll Shelby’s Racing Cobra’. In the race Jerry Grant drove CSX 2323 (no. 146) with Dan Gurney, but in a practice ‘session’ Bob Bondurant and Jerry shared a Cortina for checking out the route. Roads were only closed for the actual race, not practice, so other road users and spectators were in for interesting times. Bondurant did a lap at speed with Jerry passengering; then they swapped for another lap. It seems Bob had upset some village locals with his enthusiastic driving, so when Jerry came through the same village in the same car, a crowd forced him to stop. A double-barelled ‘lupo’ was shoved into his ear with the advice “One more time and…BOOM”!
Gurney and a more prudent Grant scored an 8th o/a and 7th in GT class in CSX 2323. Hey, every car/driver that finished the Targa under that combination of conditions was a winner!
Cheers,
Glen

Was this a scratch built model or a kit? I'd love to know more about it. Fantastic job !

Thanks for the response. I started with a Scale Coachworks 1/24th resin FIA Cobra transkit (not sure if it's still available), and added parts from the Revell Cobra, AMT Cobra and the metal SMTS 427 Cobra kits, as well as aftermarket wheels/tires, brake rotors and calipers, scratch-built roll bar from Evergreen bar stock, MCW scale lacquer paint, braided oil lines, metal screen and a few other goodies. The model took about a year to complete.
