Default Edge Treatments

Can anyone tell me how the edges of the different openings were treated on original or aluminum bodied cars. Did the aluminum fold back on itself, was it wrapped around a reinforcing rod, other method?

I know the body rolled around the cowl and door tubes, but what about the wheel openings or the nose and oil cooler openings

a sketch of the different sections would really be great but just comments on how they were done would really be helpful

thanks

Paul

Default Help

Ron,
Looks like I am striking out on my search for info on the edge treatments.

Any chance you have a picture of the inside of a wheelwell that would show how this is/was done. Even a picture of a Kirkham would work

Thanks

Paul

Paul,
If you look thru this thread titled (million dollar skunksworks kirkham) i remember them talking about how they roll aluminum around reinforcing rod. There was a video attached with it showing how its done.

Paul,
On Aces the wheel wells (and lower valences) look like they are wrapped around a formed rod (maybe 1/8"?), and the grill opening is formed, but not wrapped around anything. Not sure if the Cobras are the same but I can take pics if you would like. I also just remembered that one of my Aces came with what was supposed to be an original 427 rear clip with some minor body damage. I can check that later today and see how it is done on it.

Paul, I checked the rear clip I have and the wheel wells are wrapped around a rod, and the rear valence is folded over on itself with no rod. I rechecked the 2 Aces and the front valence on both is wrapped around a rod, but like the Cobra rear clip they are folded over on themselves. To summarize, all wheel wells and the front valence on the bottom are wrapped around rods. The grill openings are formed but not wrapped around themselves, and the lower rear valence is folded over on itself.
