Default California - Contempory Classis as a 1966 Ford?

I am looking at a Cobra Replica on eBay. It is a Contemporary Classic listed as "1966 Shelby Cobra Roadster 427 SC"

Shelby Cobra Roadster 427 SC | eBay

eBay item number: 221480622671
VIN#: CCX3-3443

Living in California, I was concerned about the title/registration because the vehicle has antique plates, which I did not think you could get for a replica. I emailed the seller and asked him how the car is titled and he responded that it is titled as a "1966 Ford"

From what I have read, it sounds like the car is not properly titled. He says it was registered before the SPCN program and that is how they did it back then. I would hate to place a bid and have to deal with DMV later about it.

Can the car be properly titled and registered in California like this?

Hi,
I'm curious how the owner got it registered as a Ford. In California even 30 years ago my understanding was that cars are checked by CHP or DMV in case of special cases - kit cars and historic vehicle...

As first the historic plates all it takes is a request for them once the car is eligible. BTW im about our request some for my 1945 Wyllis which runs at city parades as a historic military vehicle .. this the kind of justification that works.

The car is not legal registered as a 1966 ford. Many were registered that way before SB-100 and they got the titles from that place in Georgia that was busted by the Federal Govt. for various things. The Historical plates aren't legal on any Special Construction Vehicle in this state. I fear that when you go to the DMV you will have the same problem a guy here had. They registered his as it was shown, a 1965 Ford, took his money, and a couple of weeks later they pulled his title. He wound up selling the car out of state.

That's a nice-looking CCX Cobra.

Why don't you phone the California DMV, and ask them what it would take to correct the title. Assuming you can't simply transfer it "as is" within the state, since it's already titled and road registered there.

Just checked it out and it says "Sold". Did you buy it? If so, let us know how the registration works.

It's marked sold as the auction ended in 2014

High bidder got shilled

Brian,

To answer your question, he would have to use SB-1578 which was added to allow this to be done. It uses the same 500 numbers and basic format that SB-100 does, but he has to surrender the old title and go through the process of having it inspected and assigned a VIN by the CHP. Also he has to have papers that show what the car is worth and depending on the mood the DMV is in, he may have top have it appraised and a safety inspection done. And it will not be cheap.

Bill,

Minor technicality Will have to pay a little more attention to minor details. Had the car out for a run today, mid 60's in December in upstate NY does not happen often.

Have a merry Christmas.

That's assuming the "shilled" buyer registered the car in CA. Which he did not.

Signed Shilled buyer.

Sorry to be the bearer of that news so late in the process. But as long as you are happy with the purchase, that is all that matters.

All I can say is good luck to buyer! Always hope for the best news, but in CA they stand on our necks pretty hard!
