I had a very similar experience at Terry's... The CHP officer used the SPF number that was stamped on my frame. When I asked if he needed to rivet a CA VIN tag on, he said, "Nope, there's your VIN - right here", pointing to the SPF number stamped on the front cross member.

BTW, I went to the CHP office on Junction in SJ
