I guess the main point is that if you buy a car from out of state and it's registered as a 1965 (whatever), make sure that the car follows the standard registration protocol for that state. If a car is mis-represented in another state, the California DMV will probably register the car, but it could come back to haunt you.

Alarms should sound off in the DMV's system when someone walks in and wants to register a 1965 Cobra. Really, how many original Cobras would the DMV see in a given year!

When I was finished installing the engine & ready to drive my car it was Sep. I wanted to drive it awhile until Jan and get the SB100 number. I didn't know for sure, my car wouldn't pass smog, so down to DMV I went.

Try handing them an MSO signed by Carroll Shelby, that says Model: 427 Shelby Cobra & Model year: 1965!

The real kicker was that they sent me home with a temp to bring the car in for vin number verification!
It was on the way back to DMV with the Cobra that I noticed that my speedo was running backwards. So of course, was the odometer. By the time I got there I had 99,990 miles!

I told the DMV inspector the problem with the odometer but, she said "it doesnt matter I have to read what it says today"!

So my car got entered into the DMV computer as; vin number: CSX4795, a 1965 Shelby 427 Cobra w/99,990 miles!

jdog
P.S. I didn't even attempt to straighten it out until I got my SB100 number in Jan.

Great story jdog!

You could have probably gotten away with that. 1965 Cobra with 99,900 miles. The mileage would make sense to some DMV auditor

Jdog,

Some people will do anything to make it look like they really drive their cars a lot but that tops anything else I have heard. Now if you had driven it up here and given me that ride you promised, you could have had well over 100 K miles on it. I guess on the TOP is is different as they didn't care at all about the few miles mine had on it and said then title would show 0000 with
SPCN.

Having not read the entire thread, my comments are probably repetitive, but I'll make them anyway. THe Peoples Republic of Kalifornia is about revenue, not about justice or honesty or support for the hard working people who have tried so long to pay for it through property and sales, and road, and special taxes. They don't launch large legal actions against illegal aliens or the groups that support them, because they don't have any money to recoup to pay for the action. They do file actions against replica car owners and manufacturers because they do have $$ to pour into the coffers of the state. I left Kalifornia 19 years ago and I miss the weather and my home there a lot. I don't miss the far left, fall off the edge, "give me something because I am entitled" political environement. The State of California is in a financailly dwindling spirol that will destroy it in time. Given the mentallity of the people who run the state, there is nothing anyone can do but sit down and write the eulogy. RIP California.

Hey Dan, look at it this way, if California self-destructs and falls into the ocean, You'll have beach-front property!

Dude... you should've lived in Valencia. It's the most uptight, conservative, right-winged burg I've ever had the misfortune to live in.

Dan-wow!The Peoples Republic is but a shell of it's former self.I move to Ka. in the early 80's.Ending up on the Esplanade in Redondo Beach.Ocean view, snake in the garage,"Babe Watch" live in front of the house.Who could ask for more?Silly me...The Peoples DMV suspended my Cobra registration TWO YEARS after i moved(2001) and registered it in Tucson because they didn't like the way another state did their DMV work..At least they sent the suspension notice to my place in Tucson.15 years ago, leaving Ka. was un-thinkable.I still miss the beach,Angels Gate,Walkers and a few other places.I guess the trade off is "T-shirt winters".

In Ct. we pay 6% sales tax on the purchase price of the car when you register it.
Most towns have books in there office with pictures of different older cars and there value. Some check e-bay etc for comparisons. My town had at least 10 different cobra's listed and eventualy went with my purchase price. I think they wher fair in there evaluation. You can't have a new roller with a $14,000 Rouch and say you only paid 20,000 grand for the car- there not that dumb!
Well mabe they are in other things. lol

OK I know I am going to get some bashing with this response but I simply can't resist because of all the negative CA bashing and whining about the SB100 process. Here is what I found.

1. I went to the DMV office Jan 2 and lined up early and was 3rd in line. After utilizing my natural patience and doing what they told me I walked out of the office that morning with my papers telling what to do next and the hand written sequence number.

2. CHP was done, easy set up and visit and they verified the vin.

3. I received the official sequence paper work in the mail on or about Jan 31.

3. BAR, again easy appointment set up and they were done in about a 1/2.

4. Brake and light check, found a place by doing a search, went there and it was done in 1/2 hour after a small adjustment to the headlights.

5. Set up a DMV visit over the net and went in this morning and handed in all my paper work. Said thank you and walked out with my plates about 15 mins after arriving.

Now I am going to just drive the car almost everyday because here in CA we can.

BTW my car was incorrectly registered the first time but I followed what they told me to do and it ended up being such and easy thing to do I just don't understand. Sometimes when you try to get to involved and figure out stuff like this it just creates far more issues and tension. You all know what I mean, just watch those types in line at the airport always trying to make things more difficult.

Life is good.

I think it is counter productive on THIS thread to bash Calif one way or another. Just follow the laws of the State, start a new thread about changing the law if you like. This thread is a guideline on what to do to get your car registered there under current law.

1.telling the truth is NEVER negative.
2.It's not "whining"-it's venting about a bull$hit process that is unfortunately the only option for Kalifornians.

Talking Poor idiots not living in CA

Check out all the "Cobras" for sale... throughout CA.
I'm telling ya, CA is a trend setter, but nobody cares to take notice!
If you didn't see this all "new economy" coming, then TOO BAD chumps!
We tried to warn ya with SB100 !
HOBBIES are OVER! Save your money, my friend.
We, (CA), no longer represent the "liberal left".
YOU, (the rest of the country) ARE the "liberal left!"
WE (CA) elected a Republican governor, tried to turn the tide, tried, to do the voter's will (no more taxes).
You watched, cast blame, then LOST the rest of the country to the liberals...no, wait...to the SOCIALISTS !
You Obama types saw it coming, and here it is!
Hand over your cash, my socialist friends, and forget your hobbies.
Save your money (what's left) for food and incoming govt. medical insurance.
Just buy a late model Prius, and be done with it.
Roll over and let the Obama scratch your belly.
Oh yeah, and "Live aloha".
