Same thing happens in the UK, only the usual question is...

'that a Real One or a Kit Car?' - KitCar it is, but when thats followed by a derogatory sniff, then its not quite the friendly conversation opener you might have hoped for.

Kit cars, in the UK, have a fairly bad reputation, as a grp body nailed onto a badly designed and built steel chassis, and worth very little. Given the money we put into these toys, it can feel a little hard to swallow it. Anyway, good thread, and really liked:

'"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity." - Hanlon's Razor" tagline! ...... Noted for future use.

Hello Peter…..I was really impressed with the Cobra you scratch-built. If I’d been judging the SCAT 25 show you would have won Best of Show! Really a very impressive piece of work. Keep up the great work!

All the Best, Peter Brock

A friend used to always answer the "Is it real?" question with, "No, it's a hologram"

Very cool Pete, your car is a great example of a scratch build. Mine isn't any where near as original as yours...

Funny thing is, I was looking at your pictures and it reminded me of the couple times at car shows when I was in the same positions as Peter Brock, looking at original and continuation cars to see how things went together on those cars so I would know what to do on my own car later. Made some owners very nervous at times, I'm sure, but I was respectful of the cars and didn't touch them while sticking my fat head into the wheel wells, radiator openings, etc.... to see what i could...

I'm pretty sure the original comment from the gas station guy was his attempt to start up a conversation, but I was distracted at the moment and couldn't carry through with the conversation immediately. I did notice he waited around outside his vehicle for me to leave so he could hear it run, so I gave it a little extra for his benefit. (the smoking tires comment) Everyone in that neighborhood of used/new car lots and the gas station guys love to hear it from what they've told me. Even the girls at the bank love to see it pull up to the drive up window- which doesn't bother me too much.....

Bob

I've decided that since it has become mainstream to lie all the time, er, I mean "stretch the truth" for just about everything, from now on I will tell everyone that asks that my Cobra is real and it's worth a million dollars. WTF do I care what others think nowadays.

If you believe what you say, then it's not a lie.

But the mainstream car experts will just twist the truth and tell me my car was built by Kirkham Motorsports in 2007 and point to the K badges on the car and the lack of Shelby badges and a glove box signature, and thus, it can't be an original. But, I'll continue the lie in the face of all the evidence that my car is an original Shelby Cobra. And I'm NEVER going to apologize either, though I might express some regret in the future if I hurt people here on Club Cobra.

My Cobra is an original Shelby Cobra and F all of you. It's 2016 and a Brave New World.

I don't need the support of the so-called Cobra intellgensia/establishment, I'm counting on the doddering ignorant Cobra masses out there to believe my Cobra is an original Shelby Cobra and worth millions.

You should not differentiate between devotional belief and belief based on stupidity. Believing is believing.

To quote an "ancient" philosopher, "Stupid is as stupid does." I agree. They're all stupid. If the devotional believers believe my Kirkham is an original Shelby Cobra, then they're stupid too.

As you said, 1/2 of everyone (purposely leaving out the "you know" because I now misquote everyone) is below average.

Perhaps you should, instead, concentrate your thoughts on whether or not you have timely flushed your brake and clutch fluid. And, for that matter, your coolant. Yes, I know it rarely goes below freezing in your neck of the woods, but the additives in your coolant still have a limited lifespan. That would be much more productive than dwelling on the beliefs of the mentally challenged.

I LOVE the mentally challenged and/or poorly educated. I'm counting on them to be believers.

I bet that beautiful KMS of RodKnock's still has the original brake fluid in it that came from day one.

At the last show and shine I attended I was between a Dodge Stealth and a Subaru BRZ - both nice but not significantly modified. I had people who walked past the Cobra as if it was invisible and others who made a beeline to the Cobra as if the Stealth and BRZ were invisible.

Different strokes for different folks.

Nice "redirect" counselor.

You would be wrong. But I had PANAVIA (Steve Wood) go through the car about 2-3 years ago, IIRC.

When asked if it's real, I usually respond, no, it's just a pygmy of your imagination. Sense of humor usually leads to a good conversation. Stupidity leads to stares or the classic, i told you so.
