Question 289 Chassis drawings

Hello all.

Does anyone know where I can get some drawings of the 289 chassis, frame and suspension set-ups? I understand Cobra restorers do a set for the 427. I donīt quite need the accuracy that you guys require as my scratch build is going to be on a computer but I am very keen to the model as accurate as possible. I am more than happy to pay for drawings but donīt have a huge budget I am afraid.

Failing that does can anyone supply some measurements for the chassis to get me going. I have collected a bunch of pictures and if I had some key dimensions that would allow me to make a start.

Many thanks.

Tony

Default Chassis Drawings

Do a search on Club Cobra for "chassis drawings". There are several threads. Here is one such thread that gives details and measurements.

Hmmm lets see, try 3" tube for frame rails instead of 4" and lets put them about 18" on centre instead of 20. I have a couple of pieces of .120" wall 3" 1020 DOM on my rack gathering dust. You really need to start http://members.aol.com/chuckcobra/Dr...s_drawings.htm

Thanks AC and Mick.

I have been through an awful lot of the scratch builders forum and have gleaned some dimensions which will be useful but alas no drawings.

Mick, I have been in contact with Chuck concerning his drawings but unfortunately he will not sell individual drawings and I cannot really justify paying out $400 at this time. He certainly does seem to have it totally covered though and would dearly like to be able to get me a set but if you canīt you canīt.

Can I ask the meaning of DOM. Sorry I am not an engineer but a graphic artist and this is a term I am not familiar with.

Thank you again. I didnīt expect to get helpful repsonses so quickly.

Default 289 Chassis Drawings

Tony,

If $400 seems like a lot for a full set a detailed drawings, then you might not want to jump into this kind of project. Just the price of DOM tubing will be a shock.

By the way, DOM is "drawn over mandrel" a process that creates tubing without a weld seam like you see on most tubing. Much better mechanical properties but much more expensive.

But, back to the drawings. You will spend a ton of time trying to hunt down dimensions, take photos, and ask people questions. In the end you will always wonder if you got the motor mounts in the correct place, etc., etc. For example the frame rails are 17.50" on center not 18".

I would think starting from a correct baseline would be quite valuable.

Regards,
John

Hi John

Thank you for the info and the warning about costs. Fortunately I am not making a real car but a virtual version in 3D on the computer. Its a lot cheaper, cleaner, quicker, takes up less room and mistakes are easy to rectify but the downside of course is at the end you donīt get to drive the car, although that is strictly not the case as it will feature in a racing simulation eventually.

What dimensions do you need? I have a complete 289 frame and one I am finishing up. I have lots of drawings but they are all on paper (done back before I was using computers) I have been playing with the idea of doing new solid models of both 289 and 427 just need to make the time. Somwhere I have the old model of the 289 frame I did when I made up the NOSMS logo. But it was 5 or 6 computers ago and I havent found the file yet. I am sure it is on a disk somewhere. Anyway I would be happy to take some measurements for you if you tell me what you need.

Mike
