RIP Carroll. Truly a permanent part of automotive history. His audacity and tenacity to create this amazing automobile from a funny little British roadster, has brought us all here today.

Carroll Shelby (correct me if I'm wrong) started life practically disabled with congenital heart disease, and lived the next 89 years creating, leading, inspiring, succeeding and caring. And designed the most beautiful cars !

If he taught us nothing else, he has shown us how to climb over adversities and cherish our precious lives that God has given us.

The only thing he won't be remembered for is 'how to save on fuel' !

He lived his life doing what he loved. What more could anybody ask for. Gone...but you definitely will not be forgotten Mr. Shelby.

Default I Will Cherish His First Words to Me...Forever

It is with a heavy heart that I hit these keys tonight…not 24 hours after his passing. My condolences to his family and friends.

Mr. Shelby paid me the highest compliment when this picture was shot.

CarrollShelbyNAJA

I had just gotten my helmet off after winning the ’88 National Auto Journalists Assn Driving Championship in Vegas, when he laid his hand on my shoulder, and said with a grin, “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen anyone handle a car like that!”

I checked to see if any other journalists could confirm what I thought I just heard, and saw a few raised eyebrows, grins, and nods of approval from the group.

I then told him that it was easy when the car is set up like that…it was one of his GLHs.

We sat together at the awards ceremony that night, and I asked him something that bothered me ever since I laid miles of rubber outside Mid-Ohio with a borrowed 427 Cobra a few months earlier.

Up to that point the chatter at our table had been mostly about his professional racing career.

I waited till things got quiet and said, “Whad ya think of the 427 Cobra?” You could hear forks drop at the other tables as journalists scrambled for their notepads.

He turned, looked me straight in the eye, and said, “It was a BASTARD of a car. Go like hell in a straight line, but that’s about it. The small block was a much better car.”…my thoughts exactly.

I suppose that’s why today’s big-inch small blocks are such a sweet choice for our roadsters.

His choice of words describing that monster -- Go Like Hell – just happened to be the name of the car I drove to win the Rolex he gave me moments later on stage.

I will cherish his first words spoken to me…forever.

…what a great life, huh?

Like many here I had the privilege of a handshake, autograph and a quick chit chat with Carroll Shelby. Amazing that one man had such a career … racing with the best of the best then building amazing cars with such talented team of people he worked with.

GT40

Yes there were others cars Carroll had a hand in, but hard it's to top these three.

Thank You and Godspeed CS

My wife gave me the news when I got home from work. Talk about a sad day, though we can all keep his passion going with our cars and our friends! Had to throw on a Cobra shirt and call a friend. Will miss him, as well as his presence at the Monterey Historics. He was one of a kind!

Even with this sad news, it is difficult not to rejoice in his accomplishments. Conflicts, such as this, only arise with people who have left a mark few will ever leave.

RIP Mr. Shelby. And thank you.

Many years ago while attending a car show in San Francisco, CA., I had the distinct honor and pleasure to meet this legend, he was a regular man, humble and down to earth. He has been called to the Great Celestial Speedway, may he rest in peace and thanks for the memories, especially thanks for the legacy. Already did a memorial run with my Cobra upon learnig of the sad news.
May the Great Architect of the Universe takes him well.
Godspeed in the celestial speedway...Carroll.
Fondly
