CSX2494 - Restoration and Questions

"Here's a liitle background on CSX2494, which is being restored."



CSX2494

USRRC team car, also ran FIA.
Driven by Bob Johnson, John Morton, Skip Scott, Ken Miles, Tom Payne and Ronnie Bucknum.
It has been with the same owner for 35 years.



The current plan is to restore to USRRC livery, as driven by Miles at Watkins Glen.
The goal is a touring car, blessed in racing history with a dozen wins.

Looking at the photos, please notice the following details:
Side pipes, front brake ducts, filler cap, FIA rollbar, racing bucket, hood scoop's leading edge, wipers, '97' fonts, goodyears, headlight screens.

Notice the driver's lack of driving gloves, wearing a watch and the looseness of the belts.

Who is in 98 and 62? how did they finish?

Does the windshield tilt back?
Questions exist about the quickjacks, the wheels, the FIA tank/trunk, the decals.

Target for completion is December '04

Here's a Question -
For a restoration, WHAT EVENT/LIVERY WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?

The car ran at Bridgehampton in September, 1964, with Ronnie Bucknam at the wheel.

The car wore #97 and finished 2nd in Class, and 6th overall.

In that race, Miles drove #98 (CSX2431), finishing 1st in Class and 4th overall...

Hal Keck drove #62 (CSX2127) and DNF'd, loosing a wheel.

I can't find anywhere that Miles drove it at Watkins Glen; however, he did drive it at Elkhart Lake (with Morton and Scott) to a 1st in Class in 1964.

I'll post more comments on the "details" later...

Tough question, but I'd probably put it in whatever livery it was wearing when it won the most.

Also notice the unpainted rear bulkhead. Also the fuel filler splash shield...

I would restore it to the specs as raced at the Road America 500 in Sept. 1964. The car wore #97 and raced with a small windscreen. The car took 1st in the GT class and second overall at the hands of Miles, Scott and Morton. The only downside is that if the car is going to be used for "touring" the windscreen is not as driver friendly on the street.

I may be a little biased since I live near Road America and make it there to watch the vintage races three times a summer.

Rinsey Mills lastest "AC Cobra" book has some great pictures of csx2494 on pgs 101-104 (103-104 have pictures of the car in '65 as raced by Bob Johnson). csx2494 is with out a doubt one of the best team cars in my mind. I look forward to seeing picture of the restored car.
