transmission question

I am having trouble with the drive gear or the shaft in my four speed..tranny keeps eating the plastic gear drive that runs the cable to the speedo. can the tail shaft be removed from the tranny while still in the car?..chevy four speed...never really got into the tranny end of repairs yet...this is a contemporary SC frame, don't really want to pull the body off to repair this..any help out there?..

You can pull the tailshaft housing off of a Muncie in the car--just four bolts. I dont think you'll be able to get it past the rear differential tho...If you are eating so many gears, maybe you are using the wrong speedo gear?

Not just 4 bolts. The reverse gear/idler are IN the tailshaft. You will need to drive out the compression pin in the reverse shifter boss and pull it toward you to disengage the reverse rail/fork from the reverse gear. You can then remove the four bolts and pull out the tail shaft.
