Default street stroker motor choice?

Hello Fellows! I am getting my engine started and need some advice on what to have built. This will be the daily driver, but want it strong as possible of course. I want to do a stroked windsor, but there are lots of choices. 377-393-396-408? Are any shorter lifed than others? What options do i need? forged, K.B.'s, rods? Also, whats the most compression i can stand w/ 93octane? Do the different kits have diff. comp w/ flat tops? What size carb. and cam for the most torque on the street? Below are some parts I've been reading about. Comment on it, or start over, or if you don't know, tell me who you'd call. Thanks!

PMEracing.com 408w kit, World Windsor Heads 64cc, Compcam#35-246-3(see link below).519-.536,274-286,230-236@.05, rhodes lifters, crane rollerrockers, milodon roller chain, edebrock rpm(file an air-gap), Carb.(not sure yet,old holley #3310, or new street-avenager 770cfm), duraspark w/ stock recuvred dist., 1 3/4" supercomps., 3" pipes, walker dynomax's(quiet?),for a 5 spd. car w/ 2.73 gears.

http://www.compcams.com/base/process...Known=35-246-3

northcoastperformance uses this cam.

Hoping to have a very streetable torque-monster for min investment. Constructive Criticism Welcome.

I just got a 408W rotating assembly from a Scat wholesaler, Brian Adams (goes by "Eagle" on www.corral.net, e-mail- scatstroker@hotmail.com). I got Probe forged pistons, H-beam rods, a Scat crankshaft, engine and rod bearings, and everything balanced for just over $1500. Brian was great to work with - he could probably give you some good recommendations for your engine build.

Get a tall deck 351w if you can 1971-73. Move the wrist pin as far up on the piston as you can without getting into the oil rings. so you can get the longest con rod you possible. I like edelbrock rpm heads ported better than victor jr. heads; TFS heads are nice too. Victor jr. intake, aluminum flywheel. Depending on how much money ypu have to throw at it: Roller cam, steel roller rockers, stud girdles, ARP main and head studs, aftermarket steel crank, H-beam rods. Cam selection depends mostly on how high you can take the short block. A short block / valvetrain that's good for 8000 rpm can use a whole lot more duration than a crank / rod combo that needs to be shifted by 6200.The 6200 rpm motor likes a cam with 220-240 degrees on the intake at .050" lift, depending on compression, gearing weight, and everything else. A too small cam is much better than a too big cam. It won't sound as nasty, but will be faster and more fun.

I would ask for more info! You need to build a "combo" that works for your vehicle and your intended driving habits. How much does your vehicle weigh??? What rear end gears are you running??? Are you running a 4 speed, 5 speed, or Automatic??Do you want "burn the tires off" torque or high end HP?? A street driven car usually needs low end torque...but you CAN have too much. Give us more info. dino

Ok, I think I have some of this in the post above, but it's an 86' Capri, 3200#'s, T-5, 2.73 gear, and I'm wanting a Torque-Monster.

Mr.Fixit, what is a 6200rpm motor? Is that a certain rod / crank combo? I've heard 396 (or 393?) is a better street motor than a 408. I was thinking the rpm range would be like 2500-6500 for a really torquey motor? So Alum. heads are better than cast iron? The machanist I was going to use said the iron would be more durable?

Ya know, you can put a REAL motor in that Capri, too. If you want TORQUE, you want cubes, 'cause there aint no replacement for displacement! A decent 460 will out-torque ANY small block, period, for a lot less money. If you want to go crazy, than for the price of some of these Windsor strokers you can get a 500+ cid big block and really scare the he// outta yourself!

Yeah, i considered that. I have an old t-bird 429, but wanted to try and keep things simple. Re-use same transmission, keep stock gears , etc. And hopefully stay @ $5000 w. the motor. I hope i can get 350HP on the ground.
