Default T56 Shifter location

I have no idea where the shifter is on most Cobras with the T56, obviously the rear standard postion doesnt work?

I am about to purchase a G-force T56, and it would be a real shame to get it way down here in NZ and find the shifter is miles out, after they have supplied it with a Long shifter.

My car will be running a smallblock Ford in about the standard position!
Any advice most welcome!!!!!!!

Hi Ant,

I took all the pics and details of my mod off this thread because every day I was getting a couple of emails from people asking for more detail and pics, instructions etc. I replied to heaps of them with a package of pics and details on how to do the mod etc but hardly ever got a word of thanks from anyone. This got to be quite annoying so one day I cracked it and took all the details off the thread.

I've been modifying gearboxes for people for a while and have continued developing the mod since the first one I did back in October 2002.

Here's a couple of pics to show you the difference between a modde box and a stock one.

Here's a standard T56 gearbox with US Camaro/Firebird shifter.

Here's one I've modified.

The modified shifter setup has a very positive acting reverse lock out. Unless it's engaged you can't even feel where the gate is. The shift action is short very positive and precise. The mod takes all of the mushiness and play out that the original shift setup can sometimes have. Aussie boxes have a diabolical rear mout sifter setup.

The shifter itself is stanless steel and billet aluminium construction and is a real quality piece.

I usually polish the lever and supply a billet alloy knob. The lever shown leans to the right for right hand drive cars but I can make ones that lean left or go straight up and down. I can also do a few other styles of lever i.e. a T bar gate style like the original Cobras.

I'm making a couple of other parts for these boxes as well. I make braided clutch lines and an improved bleeder setup that lets you use a conventional bleed hose. The factory setup and be a pain unless you have the correct tool and without it you dump fluid all over the place.

To get an idea where the shifter comes out here's a pic of mine

Cheers

Default Shifter for T56

Aussie Mike,

I appreciate very much your efforts in supplying the pictures and information!
I have emailed my car manufacturer Ram UK as he has fitted a T56, but they may bend a lever forward, like the original 427 style!

From what I can gather the T56 has the original shifter about 26.5" back from bellhousing whereas the Toploader has it about 19.5" (7") difference has gotta be no good for any Cobra setup, so I assume I would be safe in not ordering the trans with a shifter at this stage and maybe just a blanking cap at the back!

The lean forward shifter is a real pain with the 6 speed. You loose a lot of sensitivity as to where the gates are and will find yourself shifting 2nd to 5th or worse 5th to 2nd. When I drove one I found it very hard to navigate my way through the gears.

Garrett (justbetter) managed to break reverse gear in his with a lean forward shifter on his T56. He was on the track at the time and going hard. What I think happened is that the longer shift lever gave him enough leverage to push past the reverse lockout when he was going for 5th gear. I modded his box after it came back from a rebuild and the shift has been great since. The I think the dogs are getting a bit tired though but he is making 550RWHP.

Cheers

Keisler I think sells new t56's with their mod. Their mod is nice in that the rear location is still usable if for whatever reason you would want to use the trans in something else.

They use a hurst shifter that has a bolt on shift lever, that may be a nice bit of flexibility over the B&M. I assume Aussie Mike's mod could also use that shifter.

I was one of those folks that sent email to Aussie Mike, I suspected he was getting flooded with questions and took the hint when he didn't reply. I still appreciate him planting the seed, I think the forward position is going to make a world of difference, at least I hope so, it has cost me a bunch of money.

Follow on question, there seems to be alot of interest hydraulic thow out bearings? Why is that, the stock t56 uses a hydraulic system already? It is pretty simple to modify the slave to use an AN fitting.
