aftermarket fuelinjection
anyone put aftermarket fuel injection on a stroked 351. i am interesteed in putting a system on my car but is it worth the $2500 for the system? let me hear your story.

I've got a Mustang based EFI system on my 408W. I say "based" because the only stock piece is the computer, and I'm going to get a custom chip burned for it, so even the computer won't be stock. I went with EFI for a smoother running engine, and frankly, the idea of having to adjust a carb scares me.

Take a close look at the new GEN VII stuff from Accel.........Not a user friendly item, but with a trained installer, it puts all the others in it's price range (ie: Holley, Edlebrock) to shame...........

None of my EFI parts are custom - they can all be bought from various aftermarket sources. I've got most of the parts and sources listed on my webpage: parts list. I've started the engine up a couple times, just enough to get the timing set. I've got quite a bit of work left to do before I get it on the road though.

Yes. They are a pain to setup, they cost a fortune, but they look cool and you can make some low and midrange torque improvements. Depends on how much "cool factor" is worth to you, and whether some more midrange torque is worth several thousand dollars.

I've got one
My 351 has the Holley system on it. I haven't found anyone yet in Georgia who can straighten out the fuel map for it, so I have a engine that runs rich for now and gets about 10 miles to the gallon. I think I would probably be sold if I found someone (or could be taught) that could work on it. I just keep changing the oil every 400 miles or so until I straighten it out. Anyone have a fuel map for this engine? |

Holley should have something close. Did you call tech support? They should also have a list of approved vendors that can work with you. I know most other manufacturers do. Who did you get your system from? Call them. |

I got the fuel map off of the website. It does just as the instruction book says, gets its running. I need to spend some time in the passenger seat with a laptop while someone else drives. I just haven't had the time this winter. The system was installed by a company in Ft. Lauderdale for the guy I bought the car from. Bill at SA said he could fix it for me... with a new 4 barrell.

The problem with writing a fuel map for a custom engine, is that the map needs to be custom as well. Factory FI can work great cause it always goes on exactly the same engine combo, in the same chassis every time. You can get a fuel map that will allow the car to run, but not great. Then it is drive it, data log the run, make changes, data log, etc. this takes alot of time. It takes even longer when the laptop cpu you are using keeps locking up during the data logging drive sessions. That was really irritating.

I knew that engine modifications were the main problem. Although Holley is specific in saying that the base maps only are enough to start and idle the engine and further changes will be necessary. It's along way from for instance, GM's throttle body injection on older trucks, or Ford's injection on the mustangs. But they knew exactly what they were programming and had milllions to spend on getting it right. I still may lean back towards a carb in the next year or so. Anyone want to buy a Holley 650cfm system with little use?

Take a look at this system from Wayne Presley. It's very user friendly, no laptop required for tuning, and the "wow" factor rates amongst the best of 'em. I'm an old carb guy, and efi illiterate, and I tuned it easily.

Which computer controls the whole thing makes all the difference. I have seen one that is just a few dash pot adjustement screws that makes it really more like the old mechanical FI but without the cam driven fuel pump, and better idle control. It made gobs of power and was tunable by somebody who is carb tuning proficient, forgot who makes it. The last one I tuned was a speed-pro computer, about three years old, it was a headache.

There used to be a Holley fuel injection forum at Holley.com (I think).
Holley put it 'under construction' for a while before totally walking away from it. It no longer exists. Real Reason: most posts were complaints/problems that Holley could not resolve or fix. No forum, no more problems. Too bad for you, because you probably could have gotten a fairly close map from a poster there.
Have you searched for other Holley injection forums?
