I think the sound is a matter of many things,,maybe to complex to figure out,I mean why do all dogs sound different ? by breed I mean,,same deal,
And I most definately can tell a big block 460 from an fe,,almost always, there just different,
I cant tell much difference in the aluminum versus the iron, but the alloy block i have messed with is alcohol burning and 14.1 compression,,destroked to 399,,still sounds like a 427,,go figure,,

It is about a lot of factors, mainly cubic inches. The bigger the displacement, the bigger the bang or thump.Comparing apples to apples.I for one prefer big blocks, first is the shear size of the block sitting in the engine bay.The other big one is a 500 hp big block is a better street motor than a 500 hp small block because of off idle torque. Finally,at 80 mph a big block can still torque the frame when you whack the throttle passing another road warrior. My opinion is based on a car set up to take full advantage of what a big block can deliver.By no means meant to take anything away from those of you that prefer small blocks.I ran them for many years in my toys.

Here are a few I found for sound. I think my next Cobra will be a twin turbo.

Original competition Shelby Cobra sound.

One straightforward way to address this matter would be to do a double blind test where people who claimed to be able to hear the difference would listen to a variety of engines and express their opinons as to what they were hearing. I think that would go a lot further toward explaining the differences in perceived sounds than analyzing the mechanics of each engine. After all, it may be that people who spent a substantially higher sum of money for the privilege of owning a 427 FE may just find it comforting to believe that they can hear evidence of what they paid for.

Default sounds

Go to You Tube and type in the search engine "Carbon Cobra" and you will here what a sideoiler sounds like.
