Where do you lift a 351W?

My engine finally arrived!!! Can anyone give me some advice on where to hook onto it to lift it properly. I am afraid of having a bolt pull out of the casting and dropping the whole works (oops). I know I saw an old thread on this, but after looking and searching I can't find it. Thanks.

Is the intake on it ? If so,then pick it up with a pull plate bolted to the intake.

My engine was just delivered and the machinist who delivered it had two threaded eyebolts screwed into the heads. One was screwed into the front of the passenger side head and the other into the rear of the driver side head. We had no problem lifting it with a sling and a hoist.

In the past I have also lifted engine attaching the sling to the engine using manifold bolts.

I have an engine lift balancing sling that has four separate chains attached to a metal bar that you can adjust with a long threaded rod. With this sling you can balance the weight evenly.

Summit has one called an engine load leveler Part # SUM-G1022 for 64.95; but you can probably do better at a PEP Boys or Autozone, thats what I did. Got mine for about 40.00. Summit also carries an engine lift plate that lifts an engine from the intake manifold. They list two different ones, a universal one part # SUM-G1015 (19.95), and one made for Fords, part #SME-51590000 (49.95). Or you can just use simple chain sling.

If you lift the engine with a chain bolted to two intake bolts, it will only be a matter of time before you need to put thread inserts in those bolt holes. Frontand back of the heads is where I recommend, An engine tilter is very nice to use as well.

Thanks for the information everyone. I waited a long time for this engine and am a little nervous handling it. I still can't believe how the internet (and this web site) an hook me up to so much knowledge and so many ideas. What did people do before this?

We used to read every car shop manual we could get our hands on. The older ones had much better info on the basics and componant overhaul. Also, we would hang around with other motorheads and help them work on their hot rods and duck when they threw their tools, then try to steal their girl friends

Put a bolt or eyebolt in the front of the Drivers Head and one in the rear of the passengers head. Use a good quality hydraulic lift, use a good quality lifting strap. The strap doesn't mark like a chain would. Should be able to get a strap from local good hardware or tool supply house. When using the strap it is very easy to adjust the hook so the motor is balanced and in a good position to put in, it won't slip during lifting. Good luck with your A & C build.
