I think it's probably normal . I had a '69 'stang with the CJ and the same gears, you are probably turning 3000 at 60mph (that's about what mine turned) and it does get pretty warm. You've also got to remember that heat soaks in after you stop,with some air moving under it it probably has a little cooling effect.
