Engine casting number/ serial number

Where do you find the engine block casting number and/or serial number.

I believe my 351C 4V has the following number:
D2AE-CA which when doing a bit of hunting suggest 72 4 bolt (I know it is 4 bolt main) but Cobra Jet version.

I am trying to determine the 'origin' of this engine block.

The casting # is along the pan rail above the starter location. The # you posted is for both a regular engine as well as the CJ (all '72-'74). If the pan isn't off it may only be 2 bolt mains, the Cleveland blocks were all cast with 4 bolt ability but the main caps were different (as well as the finish machine work) on the 4 bolt block. The CJ name was dropped from the engine after '71 and was just referred to as the 4V, they came originally with a cast iron intake that used a spreadbore carb.
