Roscoe-i had a similiar problem. And after tossing numerous parts at it,it dawned on me.
The bottom magnet in the MSD distributor had cracked.

This was the cause of the intermittant problem and finally when the crack widened enough-it was dead.

Just as an FYI, MSD was recently bought by Rousch. Expect quality control to be tightened up just as soon as the management transition happens..........

Maybe they will throw out all the Chevy stuff.

More likely they will re-vamp the Chevy gear and peddle all of the old junk till it runs out. Then maybe they will get around to our stuff. Yes, I know Rousch has a history with Ford.

Well the msd box came back and everything is ok. We checked the magnetic pickups and they both seem bad. MSD said they will send me two at no charge. So now I'm puting everything back together and see what happens. Also put a topoff charge on the battery, although I don't think that is the problem. Looks like the pickup.

Hope to hear about you cruising around again. Not many good days left (for those of us that have seasons).

Well I got the new pickups from MSD...no charge....thanks MSD. I'll be putting them in tonight. Checked them for resistance and they both check out at 578 and 580 ohms. The old ones were all over the lot and would not give me a steady reading so I suspect this was the problem. We'll see tonight!

Default MSD

As a user of MSD in the past, one of the main benefits of MSD is lack of plug fouling, and of course a great spark, and from what I have read better ignition means more power!
The other question is reliability for a road race car, I had an MSD 6AL with a dual point Mallory distibutor and blaster coil on my big hp injected Chev- no problems, but I read posts of MSD analogue and digital giving a certain amount of problems, and in race cars having dual ignitions in case one fails - I was about to order MSD but feel they aren't that reliable, and it would be worth having a spare coil that could be wired up, to get you home upon failure.

I dare say that can be said for any ignition system, mind you I have a little Ford Laser (Mazda 1.3) with over 300,000k still going strong on its dist module and coil etc, nothing touched on engine!

Well I am pleased with my MSD and would not have been down so long had I checked the magnetic pickups sooner. Building a car and maintaining it is a constant learning experience. One thing I do know is that MSD stepped up to the bat and took care of me very fast. They sent me parts no charge and right away. To me that's worth something. My MSD has been running over three years and 18k and this is the first problem I had.

Default Digital-6

I had an MSD digital-6. My regulator failed and was putting out over 18V. Well It blew the Maxi fuse and I lost power on the road. Called MSD. I went through the Testing with their technical rep. and no spark at coil. and positive power at ignition key switch. Sent it into MSD for a "mac of $65.00 repair. They called back and said it was unrepairable.. They offered to sell me a Flawed unit " label crooked, Scratched anodizing, or something cosmetic for $194.00 but with no warranty. If it is just cosmetic why not a warranty. Do they really stand behind their equiptment or are they now starting to live on their previous reputation. I will be looking at other manufacturers digital units which all seem to be less in cost and appear to have similar specifications.
