Lightbulb Heat coating sidepipes - damage

Hi all

I need some advice regarding 'HPC' heat coating side pipes.

I have just finished a new set of side pipes and want to coat them to match the rest of the HPC heat treated exhaust.

I have used steel wool to wrap the inner 2 1/4" pipe doing so in an electrical tape style of wrapping. I have then inserted this in an outer 4" pipe welding it all up.

However, I was just told that the heat treating at 360c or about 750f may burn the steel wool. The wool is an industrial type of wool supplied by an exhaust supplier in a large roll.

Neither ther supplier or the heat coaters can offer a guarantee or a solution.

Short of pulling them apart and coating them, less the inner pipe, I thought someone may have had a similiar experience.

The heat coating did not alter the first set of pipes I had coated, but they were fibreglass packed.

The coating is sprayed on prior to be placed in the oven so the coating will not get into the inner pipe or steel wool.

Will the HPC coating burn the steel wool inside?

Would appreciate any thoughts on the 'Thread' here or email me at kni-time@bigpond.com.

Thanks in anticipation of some ideas or experiences.

Here's the problem I've run into with HPC type coatings. First off, the HPC is nearly manditory on your headers and "J" pipes leading to the muffler, inside, and outside.

Once you get to the mufflers, it's not the coating, but the polishing that causes problems inside the muffler. The polishing is done in a vibrating water/detergent bath filled with polishing media/beads. This water bath matts the fiberglass, and rusts any steel wool packing. Either seal the muffler innards during polishing, use stainless steel wool for packing, or don't coat the mufflers. Use VHT paint on the muffler exterior instead.

Thanks for the quick reply there.

I would prefer to coat the pipes rather than paint them. Although the VHT spray is something I will try in the interim to match them up a bit to the existing headers.

You feel if I seal the both ends of the muffler to keep water and beads out I may be able to coat the pipes.??

I was worried that the actual heat process may destroy/burn the steel wool out.

The wool has a similiar appearance to the kitchen pot type wool and is not stainless. Will this burn out in the heat process?

I was not aware of the water/bead bath polish situation. Although I can now recal seeing some small white beads in the box when I received the first/original fibreglass mufflers back.

Would appreciate your thoughts or experience regarding the steel wool being burnt. I think I can seal the pipes with round discs and exhaust putty etc. to keep the grap out of the inners.

Cheers

Bernie

Hi Bernie,

I used to use steel wool in my motorcycle mufflers but it rusts out in no time and makes a horrible mess. I then went to fiberglass wool and it lasted a bit better but it eventually packs itself down one end of the muffler or blows out.

DiFilippo use stainless steel swarf for packing their high performance mufflers. Being stainless it isn't going to rust or break down easily. I'm going with stainles swarf wrapped in fiberglass as per Darrens reccomendation. You should maybe give Darren a call and see if he can source some for you.

If you are going to be at Mcdonad Bros tomorrow Boxhead and I might pay you a visit. I'll bring one of my sidepipes with me if you like.

Cheers

Mike

Hey Jay

Point taken.. This Thread is now dead.

I'm cutting them up and coating them and then using the stainless fibreglass/steel wool combination if I can get it.

Cheers

Thanks all

Bernie

I have headers that are joined to the J pipe and collector with a flange. The muffelers and the turn out elbows are connected with SS "V" clamps so I can change muffelers and change angle of turn out elbow.I was told at the outset that the pipes would be coated inside and out.The muffelers would be outside only.I have a set of Lo-Baks and a set of EM originals(none have any steal wool) Plus a set of 3 1/2" straight pipes .The straight pipes are done inside and out They just look like muffelers.I also made provisions in the collectors for adding Car Chemistry disk units if I need to at some time later.

Thanks Michael,

The options are endless and I am glad I placed the Thread as I have had a few emails and attachments that have been of a real help.

Thanks again for your response.

I'm just in the process of adding photographs to the forum.

Cheers
