Default Add a radio to my Superformance?

I just bought a Superformance and want to have music as it will be a daily driver during the warm months. I do not want to cut a hole in the dash for it. I have thought of mounting it right under the dash flush with it. I really want something that I cannot see unless I am using it. My thought was some type of shelf that pulls out from under the dash to be flush with the dash while I am using it and then can be pushed back in. Does anyone have any ideas or done something similar?

Rob

I've ditched the idea of a stereo install. I'm just going to buy a high quality DiscMan with a high quality single ear piece. I'll just run the cord under the shirt and around my right ear. That way I can hear the tunes with my good ear and the exhaust note can continue to beat up my bad (left) ear. The wind noise will also make listening to a standard stereo difficult. My $0.02.....

This topic has gotten a LOT of discussion lately over on this thread, as well as lots more in the past few years. Try a search on "radio" and you should get some ideas.

i installed a Custom Autosound SECRET AUDIO model radio in my SPF, with the main unit and speakers buried under the dash out of sight. only visible item is the small 1-1/2x5" face plate that will swing almost out of sight mounted on lower edge of dash. it could be attached for easy removal if wanted. the radio works by infra red wireless remote . i had to add a power amp in the trunk though to get added power. antennae is mounted on fender behind pass kick panel. no am reception ( no ground plane) but fm is fine. a cd can be hooked up if needed too. better but visible speakers/location would improve sound as well. it is not high quality sound, but it will do. i take many 3-5 hr one way trips in the car and it is nice to have something to listent to. yes, you can hear it over the exhaust in 5th gear when cruising except over 75 mph when wind noise takes over. the pipes are music too, but the radio is a nice addition. with the top up and side curtains in place the sound is fine in all ranges/gears ecxcept at wot. i have seen many radios installed in under dash ( and IN dash) locations. if you mount it under the dash, locate it back from the front edge of the dash so when the rain catches ya off guard the rain will not run down the dash and into the unit. i carry a plastic baggie under the seat to place over the read out unit when the rain hits and top is not up. bill.

As suggested, you'll probably want to get a good earpiece and portable stereo system. Unless you are crawling around at sub-2000 rpm, you probably won't hear it anyhow. Or if you do, it'll be so loud, you'll sound like one of those kids with a $5000 stereo in a $1500 Civic. My speakers are right between the seats, and I can only hear it at slow cruise speeds.

No, it ain't "real", but it's real fast....

Some people choose to rattle their windows with stereos and speakers... I choose to rattle windows with my right foot.

Not sure what your budget is or your preference in Brands and/or flash gismos ... you may wish to check out Kenwood 'Mask' systems ... and mount this under you dash on the tunnel if there is room. The 'Mask' system will automatically flip the display when you turn it on and automatically close when you cut power or turn it off. Still living in Europe, I've enjoyed the performance and practicality of this system … since it closes automatically, it’s a great theft deterrent (in my daily driver) because it appears only as a plastic cover plate over the hole where a stereo would sit plus it has a theft code rendering it useless to any ‘would be’ thieves.

No guaranties against theft and I realize this is not you main concern … but I’ve been in the Netherlands for 15 years now and have never had one stolen. This in a country where stereo theft is a National past time second only to bike theft!
