Another cleaning question (oil pan)
So here's my oil pan. Had the shop tank it to see what kinda condition it was in, and obviously it's slightly rusty. 
The inside is 100% clean. The outside is horrible. I'd like to clean this up and paint and reuse it if possible. Any suggestions on how to attack this thing??
I was thinking of taking a 40-grit flapwheel to it or something? I don't need to get it spotless, I'd just like to get it smooth so I can paint it and have it look okay. |

Just a word of Caution:
If you had it hot tanked it may have destroyed the gasket that seals the dip stick tube holder to the inside of the pan. I had this happen to me once, but did not realize it until after the pan was back on the engine. Check it out carefully as it makes quite a mess and is difficult to correct once it is installed.

Awesome, thanks for the warning. What should I do about it? Just use a bead of silicone or something around it to make sure it's sealed?

We never did get it sealed properly again, but I must say I did not attempt to remove the pan again. Too much trouble with the engine in the car. Your particular pan appears to have severe rust(?) maybe it could be epoxied from the inside or carefully heliarc welded before installing. Once installed if there is a leak in this area the windage and crankcase pressure will make a real mess! Maybe the gasket could be replaced and the rivets redone. Good Luck.

Throw it away and get a low profile Milodon Cobra Road Race pan. I got the best price from PAW in CA but here is a site that describes it.

$370 for an oil pan?  I'm trying to save money where I can. I'd prefer to clean this one up and paint it. If this one turns out to be beyond recovery, I'll just buy another cheap stocker. Not building a race motor here...stock is all I need. |

Would you rather spend $370 for an oil pan, or $4,000+ for a new motor? A Cobra IS NOT a Mustang! These things corner like roller coasters. When going, stopping, or cornering; the oil goes sideways in the pan, and the pump starts pumping air instead of oil. Air is disaster on internal moving parts. Buy the road race pan from Milodon, or Canton, and keep the oil around the pump. |

Actually the engine IS going in a Mustang.  The motor will make no more than ~350hp, and I can assure you it won't be going around too many quick corners. Doesn't need a $370 oil pan. |

Weld a handle on that oil pan, then take it outside and throw it over the fence!! Pans are cheap and plentiful on Ebay. Buy a new one.
