Default building original 427 chassis, trunk

good morning,

here is a piece of communication with a friend for the forum about the 427 original chassis rear (trunk) brackets, which may be interesting:

"the trunk drawings I sent you are for the bracket page 7, it contains four pieces.
1' 4 15/16" is one of the measurements in the drawing to identify the bracket.

friday we welded the trunk bracket which supports tank and trunk. (I don't have a seperate drawing for that).
there is a slight problem, I don't know if the angled bracket (5 3/16") from the rear pedestal up to the horizontal bracket (1' 1 1/8") is under the trunk section or next to it.

next to it seems more obvious when welding (BTW, it's really helps to have that trunk insert to position the brackets, get one)

but now what supports what?

the horizontal bracket supports the trunk insert, but only if lifted up a bit to clear the rear shock mount brackets.
I actually welded the horizontal bracket on top of the rear pedestal, so that the trunk insert now clears the shock mounts.

the 1' 4" 15/16" - bracket supports the trunk also, if you bolt or rivet through it.
I made a mistake in positioning the main chassis side bracket.
they are to far forward to accept the bracket which is the lower suppert of # 1' 4" 15/16"
the bracket I mean is the one with the big radius in it in the center of page 7.

the angled bracket (5 3/16") will hold the tank, which seems to be hanging on it.
that's a lot of weight that needs to be distributed cleverly.

not to forget the roll-over bar, which also sits on the horizontal bracket.
and the body, which ... (I don't know yet where it is supported)"

Dominik,
The trunk your are referring to evidently is a replica of the CSX31XX -CSX33XX type COBRA, and the comment on a trunk insert, must be the FGRP spare tire "INSERT", or what type of insert are you referring to?
Just out of curiosity.

hmm,
yes spare wheel insert it is, with the hex shape made form glassfibre.
I wish I could attach a pic for easier understanding.

it started in 2001, that my profile got corrupted :-(

I am not familiar with some of the terms you are using, but :

The shock mounts are slightly above this tube. On the S/C cars, the triangle shaped trunk aluminum piece that sits on top of this horizontal tube has a step on it where it meets the the tube. That raises the aluminum above the rear shock mounts. Obviously if it were sat flat on the tube with no step it would run right into the mount. Kirkham redesigned the shock mounts so they sit just low enough to clear. I am sure the glass fiber trunck tray is built with these same provisions

thank you very much.

the kick-out, for the rear upr control arm seems to be much larger than what I have.
In your picture it pretty much appears that it clears the shock mount at the same time.

Got it!

here is a pic from my first (prototype) chassis, where we did not rise the bracket.
I have to change it now, because it's 3/4" too high now (for the new and old chassis)

The upper a-arm cover in my attached photo does not extend to the upper shock mount.

It looks like you have quite a start on the chassis!
