Default Fuel gauge/sender compatability???

Hey Guys,

I'm getting ready to order AutoMeter gauges to replace my VDO's. Currently, my VDO fuel sender is a model that puts out 10 Ohms when empty and 180 Ohms when full. The closest match that AutoMeter makes is a gauge that will read empty at 16 Ohms and full at 158 Ohms. While removing the tank and replacing the sender isn't a huge deal, I'd rather not do it if I don't have to.

So what do y'all think? Should I just rip out the sender and go with a more universal 0-90 Ohm sender/gauge set or will the 16-158 gauge just over-sweep slightly? I'm thinking that I could adjust the sender arm a bit to bring the sweep down to match the 16-158 gauge, but if I'm getting into that, I might just as well go with the matched set to begin with.

All opinions welcome.

Tom

The autometer vintage gauges made for Cobra's is part number 201011 and uses a sender that has 33 ohms when full and 240 when empty.
Why mess with mismatching. Just get one that is correct or adjustable.

Yeah, I'm leaning heavily toward that, but now to decide which combination to use. My first instinct was the 240/33, but all the fuel cells I have sen come woth a 0/90 sender built in. I'm thinking that I may want to go with the 0/90 route in case I ever add a cell for race gas. I can then toggle senders and run the gauge off either. ???
