Default Carter Mech. fuel pump puzzle...

Alright guys riddle me this:

First time I put the Carter Mech fuel pump on, it did not go in. (the lever thingy.) So we just rotated the crank so it was off TDC and slid the pump on. Went in great! BUT...

I bolted it down lightly to hold it in place and then rotated the crank back to TDC. That would have pushed the lever down right?

Next day went back to loc tite all the bolts on the motor. When I went to do the fuel pump it came right out! Shouldn't the lever been locked into place by the crank being down on it? When I went to put the pump back in it slid right back in without having to rotate the crank. Did I break my pump some how? Or is this all ok?

The lever simply rides on a lobe on the cam. Spring pressure presses the arm against the lobe. There is no physical connection other than the two item touching eachother.

If I remember correctly you should feel a little resistance when bolting on the pump the last 1/2 or so. This is spring pressure you are feeling. The amount of pressure will probably depend on the lobe location of the cam.

So in the end it sounds like everything is OK

Well that is what I thought but there was really no resistance...now I'm thinking maybe it was not all the way at TDC when I rotated it back...hmmm.

The fuel pump eccentric is on the cam. Therefore two rotations of crank to one on the cam. If you just rotated back to TDC you may not have gone around twice. TDC of #6 instead of #1. This is could be why it just slipped back in.
