Should I get power steering?
Well it sounds like everyone who has it loves it, and everyone who doesn't, doesn't want it. So I'm still undecided. So the problem people are saying is that it could be to touchy at high speeds right? Well a miata is about 300lb less than a Cobra and the power steering works fine. So I'm sure it would work on a Cobra. I want to build a car that has some modern convinences. Most cars worth 40k come with power steering. So I'm leaning towards getting it.
Just wanted to get some opinions from people who have or haven't used it. thanks, JaredS |
I have PS on my car and it is fine. A friend with a FF also has PS on his. He felt the touch was too light so he inserted an adjustable fluid diverter in the system. As I understand it he can "dial in " the amount of assist he wants. If you'd like I can ask him for details on the device.

I have an iron FE engine and 18-1 manual steering.It is managable at speed but stopped it takes a lot of muscle.I have a lot of road feel .It aint like parking the family car.

It seems like just about all the Cobra racers are running power steering these days if that tells you anything. The ones with manual steering have mostly changed over.

Really? Who is running PS? You only need PS if you have a bunch of castor dialed in because your camber curves are wrong. Wait, I answered my own question. Nevermind. |
I started to design a two stage system.
I had a hydraulic pump kick in at 1500 RPM or less with a manual kill switch. Then I got a rack from an SVT or SVO mustang ( one of those is right ) Basically, the power steering could be turned on or will turn on for parking and such, but be off on the road to give you that wonderfull sensitivity on the highway. The pump Killed it, weighed like 60 pounds and cost too much. And, I looked into putting an electric motor on the engine install unit...NO ROOM. Just a little added info. If you are intersted, I still have the pump ( engine mounted 1971 unit ) and the SVO or T PS rack if you want to buy them. Let me know, PM. |
As a kid, I had a 1961 Chrysler Newport-20+ feet long, big fins and all-with manual steering. THAT car needed power steering. A Cobra is a freakin' go-kart.

I used a Sweet racing rack (from Michigan) that is used in dirt and asphalt cars. They make a electric power steering rack that is adjustable. Ends up I didn't need the pump and the straight manual steering was very light and fast. Their racks didn't cost any more than Flaming River racks either, though the electric pump is a bit salty..........

what next, I thought, automatic? ;-) I understand why one would like one, but there is more to why your car steers heavily. - old tires - small steering wheel - lot's of castor - big scrub radius (as in wheel center too far out of line drawn down from upper balljoint to lower) - wrong steering ratio - try higher tire pressure? what else? worn out parts? I see a lot of racing cars nowadays using pwr steering, like the german DTM. I don't know why. how about Nascar? Dominik, with a 16" steering wheel. |
no, not in my opinion.
It's enough spending the hole power to 2 rear wheels. :p Why should you share it with a 3rd one?? :D Uwe |

There is no "should" here. If you want it, fine...if you don't that's fine too. It's a personal decision.

nothing wrong with automatic :-) just look at Jim Hall! but the manual's neck snapping experience delivers a sensation of vast acceleration, even with 250 horses :-) dominik |
It should be against the law to install PS,PB or an automatic trans in a Cobra.
NONE of the above are needed. |

I'm counting my blessings...got a really bad back, nerve damage to my left foot...I have muscle control to push down (as in a clutch), but no muscle control to lift it up. Hey, I can do what's necessary. :LOL:

I hope JaredS got something good out of the replies, because if we push the envelop further we could argue that PB, PS and auto ist for Corvette drivers ;-)
