Default Air Cleaner

Does anyone know of part # or mfg. that makes low profile air cleaner and where I might get one? Ford says 1" clearance under hood. I have 0" with 3" air cleaner. Moroso makes a
2 1/2" any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Try Performance Auotomotive Warehouse (PAW). They show some "offset" aircleaners in their catalog. Mainly large diameter with base that sags down over the carb. Beware of linkage, distributor and other clearance problems on the underside. Have you considered raising your hoodscoop or lowering your engine?
Lower profile intake manifold?
My BBC fits ok in my LS but am now in the process of raising my hoodscoop to accomidate oval aircleaner of greater height. Should only have to raise about 1/2 to 3/4 inch.

Cobrabuilder1

Having the same problem as you and not being able to find what I wanted, I ended up building my own. This is one idea if you would like to build your own. http://craigayl.home.comcast.net/sc/ac/ac_001.htm

K&N has an 11" diameter x 1 1/2" tall air filter where the top is part of the air filter. Summit has them. Not cheap, about $100 bucks for an air filter, but you wash it, re-oil it, and re-use it.

Not a lot of options here. Cobras have minimal carb - hood clearance for air cleaner, and the smaller air cleaners rob HP for restrictive airflow.

I had a real problem with clearance and did two things that might help but the first is a damn expensive air cleaner fix. I replaced the Holley carb with an aftermarket injection system. The throttle body is almost 2 inches shorter at air cleaner base gasket area. Then I modified a Holley air cleaner that had 2 small square filters, one at each end. I removed them and made tubes that route to the front grill area and have K&N cone filters on them. Photo of my Cobray-C3 from Cobras N Vettes will make more sense than my desription. It has a 542 inch Dart gen 6 in it so space is at a premium. Aluminum dryer exhaust hose from Home Depot or the likes is very easy to bend and stays in shape so you can then glass your creation for looks and strength.

I had one of these on a big block chevy with K&N style filters & it didn't breath well. Looks great & for clearance it is great but when moving air to a large engine, not so good.

Hey CobrabuilderI....I have a K&N 3"x14" filter assembly with a 1 3/4" drop base, K&N filter and top. Bought new for $106. Make me an offer and it's yours. Filter has 250 miles on it.

Tongue, You are right about many systems being restrictive. I played around with designs and diameters to find the right combo for my set up. It did take a little tinkering and research though. I ran 2 cone filters, and are plumbed into the 950 CFM injection throttle body via two each 4 1/2 diam fiberglass tubes that I made. Using the formula tables at the back of catalog this contraption would feed my 542 inch engine at 7500 RPM plus have 28 percent additional volume available. I also found the intake air charge temp was a minimum 30 degrees or more cooler than an T B mounted oval paper air cleaner because the air was taken from the grill not under the hood.
Having all numbers available from the software of the injection CPU made gathering data easy. The most restrictive area was the HAT on top of the throttle body but spacers made it better. It also measured MAP pressure and I could moce sensor about 18 inches. This allowed me to measure before and after hat to compare readings of temp, vac and ambient air pressure,.

Its amazing how a 2 year old thread comes to life again.

Before getting a new air cleaner, try out this calculator
http://www.secondstrike.com/Technica...leanerCalc.asp

Foam cleaners are terrible.
Paper ones are marginal.
The oiled felt ones from K&N, Acell, Fram Air Hog, etc are the best at flowing air by a wide margin.

Also, check the search function for air cleaner. There are other threads.

well believe it or not a couple of weeks ago I bought the car from the original post put up by cobrabuilder1!!

I went searching on the forum tonight to see what air filter I could fit and came across this thread! So the car is still in need of a filter.

The car currently has a TINY 6 inch pancake filter, 1 inch high. I am amazed the engine even starts! :-)

Paul,
What intake do you have? With a 351, you should have plenty of room for a good size air filter. You may want to consider a lower intake, or I've seen people mill down their existing manifolds to get more room. Also take notice of your motor mounts. Make sure your engine isn't sitting too high in your chassis. Just a few thoughts...
Tim

Paul, Congrats on your new Toy! I went into your gallery and saw a backseat in a blue Cobra?? Would like to know more about that if you would please post a few more photos.
Tim gave you some great info on all points His point about motor mounts allowing you to drop engine is also right on. The way to determine if it is possible to or needs to be lowered is the PINION ANGLE. Measure or find amount of Neg. angle to see where you are at now. A drive on lift that raises car by lifting all 4 wheels is the easiest. Good info Tim!
We have found more than a few cars with wrong pinion angle with some being able to adjust back into good zone while others need the diff rotated farther than welded mount points allow so out comes the metal erraser (cutting torch) to remove and relocate mounts. Check these sites and then think what moving engine tranny up or down does to a fixed setting of the differentials pinion angle? Most of the sites do just talk about rotating the diff but what is affect of dropping engine with trans output mount not moving in relation? Good reading below jeff c
