Measuring Pinion angle

Whats the easiest way to physically measure this. I have the magnetic compass looking dial that seems to work well. If I put this on the plate that looks like a hood extending out over the pinion, will this give me the correct angle of the actual pinion? Or do I just put it on flat part of the bottom of the housing?

Do a web search on measuring pinion angle. You will find a step by step instruction but short answer is yes. You use an angle finder but need to relate it to the car centerline and crank angle to find the deltas.
This is a short and not detailed enough answer but it is very easy to do, read the instructions and write down findings. The work is in changinging the angle the right way.

The yoke or flange on the front is a good point with the shaft out of the way. The bolt or machined surface on the front or back of the housing is also a good place. They can be a little tricky but I'd recommend something machined not the housing.

Use the flat plate that the driveshaft bolts on to. Then stick the yoke in the tranny and measure the angle of that. You need to set the relative angle between those two. Of course one of those is vertical and the other horizontal, so you'll need to adjust by 90-deg accordingly.
