Well, since my thread on asking a legal question stirred up such a hornets nest I thought I would ask a car question and see if I can stir up another......

Now, before you go FLAMING me, I did a search on this and read numerous threads that came up but none seemed to address the issue....

I was thinking about adding 2 or 3 hundred pounds to my rear (cars, not mine) end over the axle area and wondered if anyone else had done so?? If so, should it go right over the axle or fore or aft of it??

Now with a 5.0 and Twin Turbos I don't think a little extra weight will be an issue...................: LOL:

I can't think of one good reason why you would do such a thing. Waaaaaaaayyyyyyyy back in the day, we used to mound extra weight (40 lbs or so) over the right rear wheel on our drag racers to help plant a pi$$ poor posi-trac system. The only thing extra weight is gonna do in your car is eat extra gasoline and make the rear end even more of a pendulum than it is now. Can you say "oversteer"?

Never thought about oversteer, could be a problem, was thinking about the lightness of the rear and the car itself....

As Terry said, you are going to throw the weight balance off a lot between front and rear. If you plan to drag race, then the extra weight should be placed behind the axle a little the way I understand it for better weight transfer. But it will be a bear to drive around corners. You want the weight as near 50/50 front to rear as you can get it for a good handling car. Mine was 51/49 and handled great. I did have my battery in the trunk.

twin turbo V8 will have traction issues no matter what, the best thing you can do is invest in the best suspension and tires you can buy. Again what are your plans with the car, cruiser, drag racer, road course, or all the above, this answers alot of questions.

Extra weight will improve traction. That will improve yout 60' times. But the extra weight will slow you down at the top end, decreasing your ET's.

A Cobra is almost perfectly balanced. It's almost 50/50 F/R, depending on the kit and build. Compare that to a Mustang where the balance is a lot worse. In those cars, you add weight to the back to try and attain that perfect 50/50 balance.

I'm not an expert drag racer by any stretch of the imagination. But I would not add any additional weight anywhere on the car.

I would do a couple of things. First, I would do everything to optimize the suspension - the right shocks and tires front and rear. Disconnect the front sway bar.

You'll want to optimize the turbo tune for drag racing. You want low boost on launch, then have the boost come on like gang busters once you get moving. There must be some way to control the waste gate for this.

Without a full cage, you'll never be able to use that car for it's full potential on a NHRA track. But, without a full cage, why would you?

Nitto 555R's...... that's all you need. If your car really puts out some real HP, you're just asking for it running tires like Goodyear Eagles, BFG's, Coopers or just about any tire that's not a drag radial.

I had a 63 1/2 Gallaxy with a 428 and auto trans in 69. Went to the Humbolt drag strip. Took off the exhaust and everything out of the trunk . I found it ran better the more stuff I put back in the trunk.
