Default Trans removal

Not sure this is the place or transmission would be better for this. Not all are of us lucky to have a lift in their garage so transmission work can be a real pain. One way I have found to make life easier is to use long bolts to be able to slide the trans back on without taking it out.

Example, say I want to work on the throw out bearing. I start by removing the bolts of the trans from the bellhounsing and replacing them with the correct thread 10-12" cap bolts. Tighten these until they bottom as you want as much aligment as possible later. While still sporting the rear of the trans, after you have disconnected the drive shaft, slide the trans out on the bolts. Keep the rear of the trans supported and you can now slide the trans backwards. Do your repair and then slide the trans forward, the bolts act as an aligment tool.

Also, if you are placing the trans up to the bellhousing after it has been completely removed, I use 5-6" bolts with the heads cut off, only hand tightened into the bellhousing and slip the ears of the trans on to the bolts. It really makes woking with the trans a lot easier. Especially, if you are doing it on you back. Just a thought.

I used to have to unbolt the transmission from the bellhousing and remove the shifter completely and just stuff the transmission rearward wedging it between the tunnel and cross member. The tip of input is in close proximity to bellhousing. I then unbolted the bell housing haging it on trans input shaft. Then removing clutch and pressure plate. Next, I can then remove the bellhousing and then the transmission. Tight confines. I have since removed a portion of the top tunnel and have made an alluminum cover so I can have some help from above and won't have to remove the shifter each time.
And for starters I jack up the car enough to get four large jack stands on car-skates under the car because I may be here for a while.
