I sense a fitting-by-fitting photo essay and encyclopedia coming...

Chas, I think the modern term for encyclopedia is "wiki."
BTW, I know folks don't go around scrubbing their Earls or Russell fittings all the time, so they must make them w/o color, but I'm sure Patrick will treat us to one of interesting money-saving threads.

Maxx, you think he cares how things look in there?
It took "the gallery" to get him to smooth out his initially poor cutting of his clutch fork. Sheesh, the man knows no shame.

Thanks, got all the filters and some oil lined up for tomorrow morining, My neighbors will love me about 6:00am. One is a lawyer and gets up about 10:00am except tomorrow, the other works with me so he will be gone. The housewifes need up anyway. My plan is to start engine, readings at 1K rpm, 2 k rpm, 3 krpm and shut off quick. I do not want the oil warming up between test if it does I will have to continue sat morning. I am confident I can get two test tomorrow. I ran engine this afternoon to ensure lubricant is clinging to all surfaces. I would love to get reading as the oil pump rv bypasses but no way do I want to rev the engine when cold. Its built like a sheet brickhouse anyway.
1) Existing FL-1hp
2) FL-1A
3) Royal Purple - probably leave this one installed.
Hoses to gauges ty-wrapped away from pulleys. Test oil Mobil 1 10W40.

It looks like Rodknock's "only driven on Sunday's to church Kirkham" is legendary from Coast to Coast.

Here are the results with oil filter temp of 59F and engine speed 3000 rpm 10W40 at an estimated 6gpm.
Motorcraft FL-1HP Before filter 78 psig, after filter 75 psig, car gauge 67 psig
Royal Purple Before filter 77 psig, after filter 75 psig, car gauge 68 psig
Motorcraft FL-1A Before filter 78 pisg, after filter 75 psig, car gauge 68 psig
Bottom line any filter that screws on your engine and does not leak and has a Micron filter under 30 is the best you can get. As you can see there is minimal pressure drop across any filter, in fact 3 psig. The real pressure killer is the POS oil cooler. I doubt seriously any filter every bypasses so we are filtering 100% of the time.
Again we have been mislead by advertising companies publishing characteritics that add
no value over what you already have.
The number one value filter out there is the Motorcraft FL-1A for $3.79
The number one filter ignoring all cost is the Royal Purple.
Each test took less than 30 seconds and I let the engnine cool for an hour between. Since we do filter 100% of the time and particulate below 25 micron does no damage magnets value is questionable. Since a sbf has than 100 psig oil pressure any filter has more than adequate burst rating. Since the filters never bypass, any filter is acceptable even dirty side bypass, Since most filters are 25 micron and only get better with contaminants any non-race filter works. There is no wrong answers with your filter choice except Fram. Once I am done with the Royal Purple, I am going with the Ford FL-1A.
Thanks!!!

Did we ever get confirmation that the micron rating for the FL-1HP is less than 30? I still have a couple of new ones left and will switch to the -1a when they are used up.
Also, Filtermags - total waste of money or is there some benefit?

There was a TV commercial on in betwen cartoons last night. They were selling this little magnetic bracelet that supposedly gave you strength and better health. At first, they pushed this guy in a shopping mall down on to the floor. Then they gave him the bracelet and could no longer push him down. I think the Filtermags are pretty much the same thing.

I find when I wear the bracelet I don't have to use a jack to lift the car. Much faster that way.

FL-1HP have a micron rating of 27, the FL-1A is 25. So with FL-1A you theoretically get better filtering which nobody in three lifetimes would realize. The FL-1A is my filter of choice. You can do a complete oil change with 9 quartz of castrol 10WXX and new filter for $31.00 from walmart, if you like synthetic, it goes to $50.00
On a side note I cant say the filtermags are a complete waste, I argue they have the ABILITY to do more than the clamp on PatrickT filter, LOL!!!!!
I would have zero heartburn using a filtermag, proof in the pudding I just one off ebay for $12.50 plus $4.95 shipping, oh yea!! Usually retails for $39.95. I am going to install and cut open the filter in 6 months. Problem is we will never know if those particles would have gotten through the media since it attracts metal on the dirty side.

Maxx:
Where did the 25 microns for the FL-1A come from? I would have bet a month's pay it's more like 10 microns.

I called the ford techline and the kid read me the details, he never said micron just 25 "U" I said the "U" means micron, LOL!!!. I am 100% sure it is not 10 microns!!!! Ford is good but they aint that good. Even the best filter on the market IMHO RP has 20 micron at 97% and 25 at 99% single pass. I think the FL-1A is 97% at 25 micron, remember at 4 gpm at 2K rpm it takes about 35 seconds for your entire 9 quarts of oil to go through the filter, sooo once again single pass is just more misleading advertising, Ok I will take two passes or 70 seconds to get the 100% 25 micron rating.
Heck as the filter gets dirty it gets more efficient!!!

What did you use? Steel wool? Emory cloth? The right look would be a very fine wire brush for that slightly brushed alloy look.
Not to be too picky, but you still have some blue in the cracks.....although this qualifies as a half-ass job for sure. Maybe a notch about that.
