				 427 stroker
Hi there..first post...just purchased a factory five kit, and still trying to choose an engine set up.. I originall was going with an injected 347 stroker but when thinking about the overall cost to build, a 427 stroker non injected seems like the better way to go.. looking at the coast high kit. Is anyone using this kit?? what are your thoughts..also what heads are people recommending and intake??Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

clk2 - hi there. I had the same issue when I built my car and specc'd the engine. In the end, I stayed with the 408 stroker, for the following reason - to get to 427, I understand that the piston pin ends up so high in the piston, that the oil control rings have to bridge the pin area, leading to poorer oil control.
Also, rod ratio is getting fairly poor on the 427 stroker.

Wether these are real issues for engines like ours, that rarely see very high mileages, I am unsure, but my personal decision was to stick with the 408 (4" stroke, 4.03" bore, 6.2" rod length).

you will need some good flowing heads to feed that stroker - I used Edelbrock Vic jrs, sure that other folks will have their own favourites. Were I building it now, I might look at the AFR heads.
Because of height restrictions, I stayed with a performer rpm inlet manifold - this dual plane manifold actually gives my engine better low down torque than the Vic jr single plane item I was thinking about to begin with. Very streetable, but still kicks out 450+bhp. Starts to get breathless above 5500 because of
the inlet manifold. Makes wonderful induction noises through the 800cfm edelbrock carby.
I also used the Ford X303 roller cam.

I built a 425ci Windsor stroker. Wilf had a valid point about the oil ring being in the wrist pin bore, but I got away with that not being the case. Here's the highlights:

1979 351W block bored .060"
Eagle ESP 4.100" stroke crank
Eagle H-Beam rods
Main girdle
Comp Cams 230 duration, .544" lift 110 lobe separation
Probe pistons, 22cc dish....10.3:1
Victor Jr Heads (bought bare, assembled myself to match cam)
Demon 750cfm carb
Comp 1.6:1 roller rockers and roller lifters
Victor Jr. single plane intake
Canton 7 qt T-sump oil pan
Manley pushrods
Edelbrock Victor water pump
Cloyes double roller timing chain
Ford Racing aluminum pulleys
Streetdampr harmonic balancer
All ARP studs...even valve covers, carb, oil pan, etc.
MSD Pro Billet distributor
MSD Blaster 2 coil
Hays Borg & Beck pressure plate
Hays Clutch Disc for Tremec TKO
Hays Flywheel
Lakewood Scattershield
CVR 4.41:1 starter

I assembled it myself, took it to Carl Grover Motorsports to have it tuned and dyno'd....it made 484hp at 5800 and 500 lb-ft at 4500.

Total cost including bellhousing and clutch assembly..... ~$9500 |

For a 427W, AFR 185 heads are the way to go.

I have a 427 small block built on a Dart Block. Very happy with it. Eric @ Performance Engineering built it. It did 559 Hp & 564 Ft Lbs of Torque. It is a short stroke (4.00 in Stroke & 4.125 Bore)

 Some of the Specs:
 Dart 9.5 deck block
 AFR 205 Heads
Comp Cams Hyd Roller (Eric's custom grind)
 Victor Jr
 Demon 850
 Scat Fordged Crank
 H Beam Rods
 MSD

It is in SPF 1572 and I am still breaking in. Very streetable

Put on FE Valve covers (Cobra 427) with adepters for the traditional look

427 stroker guys, what are the torque characteristics of your engines relative to RPM. Do they idle well around 1K? Also, do the AFR heads have the same exhaust manifold pattern as the Windsor heads?

AFR 185s do have the same exhaust header pattern as Windsor heads.
Mine's not quite a 427 (it's a 408), but it's got a pretty smooth idle. This is dependent more on your choice of camshaft than the displacement of the motor.

I'm running a 418 stroker with the AFR 225 heads, the bolt patern is the 3" wide pattern ( same as dart ).
As far as idle goes it"s pretty good at about 850 - 900 rpm.

Motor makes 606 hp @ 6100 rpm and 572 ft. lbs of torque @ 5100

I'm in process of building a 427w on a Dart block. 4in stroke and 4.125 bore, King crank, J&E forged pistons, Victor Jr, Holley 750hp, Eagle H-rods, Brodix Track 1X heads, and LOTS OF MONEY!!!!! Builder said 600hp on pump gas and it will idle!
There anit nothin money cant build... Can I sell another quart of blood yet..??

clk2,I have the CHP "427 Classic" that you are thinking about. I went with the base package with no upgrades what so ever. I have had it done and on the road for about 3 months now. I ordered it through their local distributor. Took a little longer to get than they said it would but I think that it was well worth the wait. With sending it to the distributor I was able to do the break in on the dyno so I have a baseline that this engine puts out. We hit 529HP @ 5700 RPM and 535 ft/lbs of Torque @4700 RPM. Very good in my opinion for a Windsor. On the road it is very drivable and doen't have any problems with any aspect of driving. Not sure of my current milage averages, my speedo is slightly off right now. One of my concerns was with having the warrenty, I wanted something with one if I was to plunk down a large amount of cash, you just can't go wrong with it. You will be very sastified with CHP in my opinion.
 Good luck,
 Todd
