I just picked up a falcon with a supposedly hipo short block. Is there an easy way I can tell for sure ? it is a 6 bolt with c5ae casting number. It is not the original block for the car it is presently in.I appreciate any help,thanks

Hello Bob, I am a new member to the Club Cobra. I have a restored '65 HiPo engine that will go into a Kirkham FIA car I'm building. I painted it black.
Block: C5AE-6015 E
Casting date: 5 B 10
Assembly date: 4 B 12 F !!!
Did Ford cheat by 1 year on the casting date or did rather the inspector F make a mistake? How can I find out what is right?
There is no number on the right side on the block above the oil pan. In your book about the small block V8 engines you say this number was stamped in. On picture c, section 5A4 on page 5-9 it looks like this number is cast in.

4B12 is too early for a C5AE block. The casting date of 5B10 looks correct. Inspector F probably got a 4 instead of a 5. Had he gotten it correct, 5B12 would have been perfect for an assembly date. Most engines I saw in junkyards were cast just a few days before assembly. HiPos could be a little longer, but could be just a couple days, too. Not all HiPo engines were stamped with the VIN. The one you referred to in my book was stamped.

On a related note, I picked up a 5 bolt Wedge Co. scattershield that is identical to the COBRA unit in an old Ford Performance Parts catalog from 64. Except mine doesn't have COBRA cast into the top like the picture. Mine has Wedge and NHRA APP cast into it like the COBRA unit. Do you know if this came on a Cobra? Or would this fall into the over the counter part category?

The WEDGE bell housing your talking about was over the counter speed shop sold and not Ford sold.Ford only sold the Cobra stuff but alot of the bell housing were made for racing and because of the early 5 bolt look alike.

Default 289 HiPo blocks

All the authenticated 1963-64 289 HiPos, including those installed in Cobras (or any other car for that matter) have had sequential numbers on the boss above the equalizer bar. If no number, could be a service block or regular block.

I have no info on the bellhousings. Sorry.

I have an an original 289 5 bolt "A" code engine in an early 65 Mustang. It's not a K code engine, but I will be happy to provide the casting info if this helps you. I also have a 1966 "K" code engine in my 65 Tiger. Not stock, but has the VIN number stamped in the ear above the pan on the passenger side of the car as mentioned earier in this thread. If any casting marking info will help, please advise and I will get for you.

Anyone ever re-cast a bellhousing? These 5-Bolt scattershields are tough to find. Should be able to use one as a pattern, correct? I was thinking of using a stock bellhousing & casting it in ductile iron to add strength.

Guys. I picked up a reproduction of the 1964 Mickey Thompson catalog. Low and behold my Wedge scattershield is listed. It's an M/T without the "M/T" cast into it. FWIW I just sold a two piece M/T 5 bolt scattershield in xlnt condition for $400.

Hello, I have two cars with early hi po engines. One is a mustang fastback assembled on aug 1st of '64 and the other is a cobra CSX2498. I will look for the number on the left side of the block and post later.

Here are some pics. It really is in nice shape. Std bore. Hardly any lip at the top of the cyl's maybe .005". I have the bolts that hold the caps in place stuck into the cardboard box you'll see.

Guys. Times are good. I'm still willing to send this block to a new home. No main caps at this point, but a standard bore 1963 cast HiPo block is getting harder to find.

I believe the 289 was around for the c3 casting with some changes incorporated such as the 289 motor mount bolt hole spread and the added third soft plug. But don't hold me to it.


Just in:

Out of curiosity I went out and measured the bore and it is in fact a 4.00 bore (289).

Yes. Any engineering number version of 289 block casting mid 1963 model year through the end of 289 c.i.d. engine production years later could be selected, tested, and completed into a HP289 assembly. There was nothing special about the blocks other than being hand picked and verified to be suitable for High Performance 289 use.

The pictures shown in Post 35 are of a late 1963 (near the very end based on serial number and assembly date recorded elsewhere) model year HP289 production short block assembly.

I just came across this thread and decided to add my two cents. I have this engine that I came across not long ago. I gave the info to Bob via E-mail correspondence a couple months back. Just wanted to share here. All parts are for sale if anyone is interested.
