Default Building a 331

I'm currently blueprinting an engine in hopes to build this summer. After much deliberation, i have decided to build a small block 5.0 and stroke it to 331ci (possibly D&D 331 kit) - due to the increased torque output and power potential. Im planning on using AFR185cc heads and comp cams. But this is where I need a little bit of guidance. I'm not sure how to figure out which cams to use (duration, lift etc.) It is going to be a daily driver, but i still want to put down some numbers. I want to stick with hydraulic cams, for running with solids can increase a risk of breaking parts - of which i cant afford. I will be running a 1.6 rocker ratio as to pickup more power at lower speeds. Another question is about the intake. the AFR website suggests the Victor Jr. RPM, and i have heard good reviews about it- but i have also heard the Edel RPM works a little better (and 'supposedly' drops 2-4tenths off the 5280). Any guidance, suggestions, references would be greatly appreciated

JMD

Either call Comp cams tech guys or the AFR tech guys and they will steer you the right way.

Hello JMD, I have a Keith Craft 331 in my SPF and it is by far the sweetest motor I have ever owned. I appraised cars for many , many years so I think I driven thousands. Again it is by far the sweetest and fastest I driven

If you go with comp cams check with afr to see if you need spring upgrade package for the heads. Some Comp cams hyd roller have some agressive ramp rates for standard AFR springs.

good luck

the motor was their top line.... all forged ...I paid extra to have it dynoed and broken in . It included dist and carb . I paid $8,000 and it took about 90 days. I recently hit 1,000 miles and it hasn`t burned any oil

Thanks -

Sorry to hijack here - but what heads did you go with and are you happy with the power? Was it dyno'ed?

AFR The motor is their 450 HP crate

mine dynoed at 469 HP at 6600 RPM

the car is so light, it has plenty of power at low RPM even if you are in the wrong gear
