Default 289K HI-PO & exhaust

This winter I will be putting in an order for a 289 car. I have looked at so many pics my head is spinning. I would like to know what application of manifolds I am seeing on some cars? Where I can find a builder to do an authentic look, and power build? Also it looks like the 289 cars had a 2" exhaust system. I know the early Mustang GT's exhaust pinched down to 1 3/4" just before the louvered tips. I cannot remember for the life of me what size outlet the manifold had? Most likely it will be an order from ERA, or Hawk. Can anyone help me with this information?

It's been many years, but my recollection is the 289 Cobra had exhaust manifolds unique to themselves. If I'm correct, there are 2 per side ,they may even be the same pieces. The front 2 and the back 2 share a manifold with an exhaust pipe out, each presumably going to a common pipe. I hadn't thought about it until typing this, but they look(looked really, because it was many years ago) like they may have only been one casting used at all 4 places. It would have been a much simpler and inexpensive piece to make than 2 separate of 4 separate pieces.

Your post jogged my memory, I've had this set of new, reproduction cast iron small block headers in a box in my garage for 20 some years. They are the hi-po set, C5ZZ-9430-B and C30Z-9431-B. They are new, never installed, some surface rust which wiped away with an oiled rag. I paid $325 then, will sell for $250 plus shipping.

Full throttle, do you have any idea if they fit a 289 cobra? I would be very interested if we can find out more.......

The picture of the exhaust manifolds are indeed HI-PO 289...but for a mustang or falcon. The 289 Cobra utilized a tube header exhaust...there is a set for sale for use on a CSX7000 SAI car on ebay...search parts for 7000 series. I think it ends today and it is for $215. This is correct for the 289 Cobra.

the exhaust manifolds shown in the photo will not work in a cobra...the webers will though!

I have an ERA FIA and have been very happy with it. If you decide on ERA, they have the headers that fit the car. They are very nice and will work with sidepipes or the under car system.

Yes,
The 260/289 street cars used 4 "U" shaped cast manifolds that had another tubular pipe connected to them that formed a "tri-Y" system. I had a set that I sold to Lynn Park long ago. The benefit of these were that Shelby only had to cast one part as all 4 were the same. Not as slick as a full tubular system but worked OK on the street cars.

Mark IV, I got my answer, and thanks to all for the information. I plan on putting in an order for a kit this winter, and all the help I am recieving to my newbie questions are helping a lot. My plan is to build a daily driver, and park it out front of my muffler shop. I am sure it will attract more attention than that 10' x 5' glowing yellow sign out front. Looks like headers are the easy way out. Now for the decision for paint. A pretty pearl yellow to match the building, or my favorite RED to match my catamaran?

I considered the Hawk, but went with ERA for a few reasons. One reason was because at the time they only offered the MGB suspension on the car. Another was I didn't want to deal with a purchase from across the "pond." If you go with the Hawk I'd be interested in your experience with the car because I'm considering their slabside as a companion for my ERA FIA in the future.

Warren, I am taking into consideration the purchase from England. I have had communication with one person who did a Hawk build. He is extremely pleased with the car. My fear is the cost of shipping for needed parts. I understand a lot will be bought right here, but I would like to stick with the suspension made for the frame. I went up to ERA in Oct., and was impressed with the people, and car. The door shut as solid as an old Silvercloud. My interest was to have the body, and appendages fitted with paint, and I do the mechanics. That is why I am putting ERA a nudge ahead of Hawk. Although a slab side is what my desire is.

A visit to ERA was what did it for me. Went up there in 2005 and was impressed enough to laydown the deposit. When you were there in Oct you probably saw mine, metallic blue, no stripe. I ordered it turnkey. Was told by Peter that it should be done by sometime in February. At the time of the order, I knew that I wouldn't have the time to complete the car myself, too many hours work and commute. Now I'm really glad I went turnkey, since my garage and all of my tools are home in CA while I'm working in MD (same hours, longer commute). Hope to have everything in one place for the next one so that I can do the mechanicals myself as you are planning.

Warren I did see your car. It was only the shell on the frame, but the color was very pretty. I have lots of time, because I just opened a new muffler shop. I have been open for 4 months, and every month is stronger. I plan on moving the stock outside to a container, and placing the car in front of the office door. That way I can't avoid the project. I did this once before in another shop in S.F. Ca. It took 2 years, but it was a head turner. Luckily I had an ex-body man working for me, so we shot the car in the shop too. Well February is not far off. You have about a year jump on me. Enjoy the car they really have a nice product at ERA.
