Default oil change on ford mosport 351w

hi everyone and happy new yr to you all

my question is this, looking to get ready for an oil change and need some info on how much oil and what oil filter to use, i was thinking of the factory oil filter that is sold thru ford motorsport, as for oil how much to use i have a 351w stroker to 392 with 475hp link below to engine.

http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts...tKeyField=9290

i guess im more worried about how much oil to put in it,

anyone here have the same engine and pan set up? how much oil do you use ? also what grade to use/ brand??

thanks for the help

well you could start by filling the filter first. and then install on engine. if it sits sideways well then i guess you can't fill it. then put 4 or 5 qt. in the engine and check your dip stick. add accordingly.

Bring the level up to the FULL mark on the dipstick. DO NOT OVERFILL!

When I talked with FMS years ago they told me to use 5W-30. I would use the lightest oil which gave me the pressure I desired. For 9 years now I've been using 5W-30 synthetic with no problems and 55 PSI pressure at 2,000 RPM. I am currently using Redline Oil for the higher Phosphorous level (Zinc) they use. I know the Redline has the higher levels since I had it tested. I use a Moroso racing filter (29 microns) in the winter and a Mobil1 filter (10 microns) during the warm weather.

I have a 4 yr old 392 Ford Motorsport crate motor with Canton pan, oil cooler NOT hooked up, and it takes 6 quarts to fill it . Oil cooler must add at least 1/2 quart, or more ? Dunno for sure . I use 20W50 which was recommended by Ford on the paperwork that came with the engine . I also use a Ford Motorsport FL1-HP filter. Bill

My 351 Windsor Ford Motorsport takes 7 quarts. Canton pan. Mobil 1 0-40. I get just over 60 lbs. pressure at 2,000 rpm. Burns no oil. Ford Motorsport FL1-HP filter.

Just over 16,000 miles on car/motor. Runs like new. Bulletproof.

Cobras - How many miles do you have on your engine? Don't switch to synthetic oil too early.

Cobras - Stick with conventional oil until you put around 3K on the motor.

Guys,

I've got a five year old 408 with the oil cooler hooked up, Canton seven quart oil pan, Ford FL1-HP filer and have always used Penzoil 20/50, recommended by the engine builder. Good solid engine but the oil presure is only 40 PSI at idle. I'd like to switch to a synthetic oil but have "heard" that switching creates gasket leaks.

Comments anyone???

if you have 40 psi. at idle, you're fine you need only 10 psi. per 1000 rpm. so really, if it drops below 10 at idle i'd worry. now on the other end............you should have at least 70psi. at 7000rpm. this is a theory that smokey yunick proved.

oh yeah leaks. you heard right. make sure you have no leaks. if it's just a weeper with conventional oil, it will be a dripper with syn.oil. for some reason it will find the weak spot in the gaskets. i think cause it is so slick n slippery.

Synthetic oil does not create leaks, it finds them. Probably because it flows so much better.

When I got my car I replaced the 20W-50 dyno with 5W-30 synthetic, my oil pressure went up! I figure it was because the synthetic had a much easier time going through all the plumbing (including the cooler) on its way to the engine (and pressure sensor).

Many owners using heavy oil may be getting more pressure at the expense of reduced flow.

My $0.02

I transitioned to Amsoil 15W50 racing synthetic for the increased zinc (I run a flat tappet solid cam) and better starting flow on cold mornings.

If you are fully roller-ized (lifters and rockers) zinc removal is slightly less of an issue.

Remember they removed zinc/s to reduce wear to catalytic converters and O2 sensors.

however zinc is available in a ZDDP oil additive, and Cheveron sells a truck oil "Chevron DELO 400" (available everywhere , including costco) in a 15-40W.

This is an ideal break in oil

The care and feeding instructions are available for download from FRPP;

http://www.fordracingparts.com/downl...tionsheets.asp

if you read the PDFs they say things like 7QTs.....

worth a look.
