I have the 3m film over my back wheel-well area. It works very, very well and is quite difficult to see. Mostly, you'll just notice a horizontal line where it stops -- it almost looks like a seam in the fiberglass. I had it professionally installed by the painter, and I think it was a couple of hundred bucks. Some people also choose to put it around the nose of the car; I did not. If you ever see an original, unrestored car, the aluminum patina around the rear wheels is quite noticable. Another choice is to put the snap-on spats back there, or a I guess you could do both.
