SPF Ride Improvement
I have the stock Bilstein shocks and springs on my SPF and was wondering if any of you guys had replaced them with anything that rides better.
By better, I mean more controlled. My car seems to take quite a hit (bounce) whenever I hit a bump in the road. There must be a better option. Something that absorbs the bump better and doesn't trasmit such a shock to the driver. My previous car, an FFR, I replaced the non adjustable Bilsteins with adjustable Konis on all four corners and felt more connected whenever uneven terrain was encountered. I might be wrong, but if there is a way to improve the overall handling, I am open to suggestions. Many have said the Bilsteins are the best you can get, but I thought I would ask anyways. |
I upgraded my SPF suspension last year with new shocks and springs from Cobra Valley that are made specifically for SPF.

I will also recommend Randy at Cobra Valley.
However I went with heavier springs and milled up some solid mounts for the sway bars. I'm willing to sacrifice some comfort for handling. |
I have QA-1's and they are great. Car sits super low and looks cool....

JHV48, how are the new Shell Valley ball joints? I received mine but have not installed them yet. Didn't they help what you are talking about?

I have Olthoff Racing custom racing Bilsteins on 1061. It's a whole different car than with the stock Bilsteins. Give Dennis Olthoff a call: (704) 647-9924.

It depends on how far you want to go. I have mine setup for Autocross. Very rough on the street but handles great on the course. 850 LB springs, Penske 3-way adjustable shocks, Modified GTP front swaybar, this was to make it adjustable (see pic). No rear bar. 285/30/18 front and 335/30/18 rear (Hoosier A6's). If you are doing track days it would be different.

I have Dennis Olthoff spring, shock, rear sway bar setup. Dennis also set proper ride height and alignment. Feel every bump but it sticks and is still streetable.

So, as a follow up, I replaced the stock shocks, springs (350 lb.) and sway bars with the ones from Cobra Valley. Feels like a different car. Slightly stiffer but more connected to the ground. Small bumps don't rattle the wheels any longer. Absorption and rebound are much smoother. Got the shocks set on number 8 out of 18 stiffness settings.
Much more enjoyable driver now with the new ball joints and suspension pieces. |

+1 on the cobra valley set up with their shocks, sway bars, etc.
I'm running the 400lb springs and the sway bar in the middle setting...firm, but 1000x better than the crappy stock set-up. Also get the rear upper shock mount kit while you are there...it's a must-replace item, as the stock one can fail. |
Thanks I'm also up grading my suspension,waiting on my ball joints to come in the mail.

You're going to love the upgrades. Ball joints are a great first step. The shocks and sway bars really top off the upgrade.

How difficult is it to change stiffness in the shocks from Cobra Valley? I ask because I'm thinking it would be nice to make the ride smoother for cruises and stiffer at the track.
Also, the shock/spring upgrade says it "accepts remote adjustable shock control from the cockpit". How does that work? Lastly, would you all agree to start with the following order of upgrades for the MkIII: 1) R/T Rear Shock Mount 2) Ball Joints 3) Sway Bars 4) Shocks and Springs Upgrade I'm not able to do all these at once. Where would a Pro 5.0 short throw shifter fit into upgrades for you? Quick shifting would definitely play a part in faster times at the track and more fun on the street :) |
