Help, Gauge Issue.
My SPF is #2303 and both my Oil Temp. and my Water Temp. Gauges stopped working at the same time 1 week ago. My turn signals stopped working at approx. the same time and I found the flasher cover damaged and shorting out on the metal clip that holds it in place. I have temporarily repaired the flasher while waiting for a new part and my turn signals now work. Everything else seems to be working properly and I have visually checked all fuses under the dash. Is there something else that could be damaged in the fuse box drop panel area that could be causing both gauges to stop working? Can anyone point me in the right direction before I start pulling things apart to test wires and gauges?
Thanks for your help,
James

Are they mechanical or electric gauges?

You have an email...
The crushed turn signal part is a normal problem related to the clip that holds it on the fuse panel. Any auto parts store has them.

Oil and water temp guages are mechanical units so an electrical issue would not affect them other than lighting. Check that the guage feeds are not broken at the firewall.

Sorry, they are the standard Smiths gauges and I now realize that they are mechanical. The purple and black wires must be for lighting as Mark IV stated. The gauge feeds are routed together from the steering column area to the front of the engine. There are no obvious smashed or sharply bent areas on my first visual inspection so I will have to pull the flexible plastic shroud off to look for crimping or damage.

I sent you a PM message earlier....Anyway...The two sensors tubes from the gauges to the engine area contain an ether like gas inside. If they are routed near a sparkplug wire, the cap, etc and a spark jumped to the tubes, the gauges could be toast. A microscopic hole from the spark (or sparks) compromises the brass tubing and the gas leaks out. They can be repaired, but the cost to replace them is just about the same…
Ususally the gauge starts to read low and then just stops working...When you remove them, you can test them in a pan of boiling water...but dead is dead...Give me a call or email if you have any questions.
