I haven't burned my leg in a few years now. But there for a while, I had some pretty good burns. But, it got to the point where I could yank my leg off the pipe quick enough so that it would only be a "sunburn" type of injury, and not a third-degree-er. What I really hated though was that skin and sinew stains were left on the side pipes. I found that 409 cleaner worked wonders for removing parts of me from the ceramic coating. That's my tip for the day.

I don't like the look of the heat shields either, but don't like the look of scars on my passengers even more!
First year my 80 year old dad burnt his leg (didn't tell me for months) and my nephew did (even after I warned both of them repeatedly).
I installed heat shields last year and no one burnt their legs
