looks like we all have different opinions. I guess it helped that I bought mine on ebay for less than 1/2 the cost......(smiles). I can tell you, if you are down to one ear and you have 2 stumps where ears used to be....the tool is priceless (it still can get on the broken stubs). But that was a defective spinner problem...so you may never get to that point.

So being that I alreadt purchased it and it will cost $50 to return it plus shipping (20% restock fee) is it worth keeping it as a backup, or should I send it back. . .

I kept mine, based on the horror story about how to get spinners off, surgically, I'd rather invest in the aluminum paperweight that worked for me at least once. Compared to the price and destructiveness of the surgical method, it is a good investment. You might look at it another way, % of cost of one or two destroyed spinners or % of investment in the car (I love thisone..I can justify most anything..says "she who must be obeyed"

This is the method to use.

To remove do the same. Whack one ear rotate to the next and so on. They will come off. Even if it takes a lot more whacks than you think it should, they will come loose. I have a spare set of tires and wheels with slicks on them and I change my wheels often. Wheel must be off the ground to take pressure off the spinner. I use a dead blow hammer.
I can't see using the tool with the wheel off the ground.
Take the money and buy a spare set of spinners.
Worse case is you would have to destroy the spinner to get it off and you have a spare to go right back on.
