I'll definately change your f/r weight distribution!!
|
Scott,
The circumstances of the spin. Was this a brake (bias?) issue entering the turn or throttle coming out of the turn? |
It was a braking issue as I turned into the turn. I got on the gas a little too late and hadn't reset the rear of the cobra. With the weight on the front it allowed the rear to spin. Just a small brainf_rt!
|
Yep, gotcha, that's a tough turn in any car!
Hope you git-r-back together soon, good luck. |
Avons vs Goodyear Slicks
Scott - How about lap time comparisons?
|
Sorry, Didn't get started on that comparison. Let me get the new motor in and will see!!

Yoko Cust Service --
I just filed a webform with yoko customer service at Yokohama, to ask about getting our sizes of AVIDs back in distribution. --Steve

I thought I would dig up an old thread for posterity sake and also since I can't find the info I want.
Does anyone know the tread depth of the Avon cr6zz when new? Thanks. |
Rod,
You still rolling with the piece o' scheit stock tires on your nice shiny Kirkham?:p Before you invest in a set of Webers or fuel injection you need to buy a set of Avons or Billboards so you can put a bit more of your FE power to the ground.;) I have a set of Avons but don't know the original tread depth; my tread depth has decreased quite a bit on my rear tires since I got them.**) Stentor |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't most normal HP tires today have a tread depth of around 10/32"? I'm just trying to figure how "slick" the CR6ZZ's are. The tread depth seems quite small to me, when viewed in a pic.
Stentor, yup, still running the Avid's. As Doug said, mine will age out before they ever wear out. I'm kinda looking at a 2nd set for potential  track use only, but then I'd like to find a nice set of magnesium Halibrands too. If I'm wishing here anyway, then I'd also like to build a SOHC engine too...Santa? |
How do these Avon tires behave in wet conditions? (compared to the mentioned other brands and types)
We have a lot of rain and driving a Cobra in the rain/wet roads is a bit of a challence. |
Avon Track Tires
I run the smaller size (225 / 275) and they work about as good ar the GY Bluestreaks. I start with 23 psi and it grows to 25 or 26, the wear pattern looks good.
I have not experienced the instant break loose and hope not to. |
how many miles are people getting with their Avons?
ack fia: on the track you run 23 psi all around? How much do you psi to you have on the street? |
I got 7000+ on my first set. I have just over 6000 on set number two. May not quite make 7000 on this set. I have about 12 track days on these tires as well as street miles. As a note, on the track, I don't experience the sudden breakaway another posted observed. AT 28psi I can hear and feel the tires when they reach the limits of adhesion and am usually able to limit/control the slide. This is on a SPF with a very set up suspension. FWIW.

Avon Pressures
fasd,
Pressure is 23 all around. I'm going to run Monticello with NASA tomorrow so I will get better warm data. I don't drive it on the street (MA won't give me an inspection sticker). Pat |
Here's a dumb question: how do you know when you Avons are done, worn out? Are the belts showing through? You don't need much or any tread, do you? I mean, for street driving on perfectly dry days, how much tread do you need?
|
ack fia:
at 23 psi, is the the point at which the tires would just start to "turn over", i.e. any less inflation and you would start driving on the side wall? that's the point you look for on the track, right? (with Avons anyway; I heard with most lesser tires, you would over inflate at the track)... |

Honestly, it makes little sense to penny pinch on the part of the car that actually touches the road! I expect these Avons to last me another 3 to 4 years at least. And that, IMHO, is very reasonable for high performance tires for a "hobby" car. YMMV, Randy... |
