Well, my mechanic has inspected and determined it is one of three things, clutch failure, pivot bearing or faulty (but new) t/o bearing. Hooray - Not a transmission problem. The mechanic will need to pull the tranny but he's wondering if there is enough room. I think I will start a new thread asking help on how best to remove the transmission without taking the engine out. Thanks to those who have provided input.
