The locking mechanism reeks of British design. I have had luck rolling the star wheel with my thumb as I gently raise and lower the boot, all the while testing for it to "LOCK". We have all had this issue, it is not unique to SPF. I'm not sure that a prop rod wouldn't be a better solution.
