Metal on metal sound (clanking)

occasionally coming from the right rear...I did a search, but too much data to sort thru... trunk is empty or is it a boot?...Shock bolts ok...this is not a bushing or a fiting or a rubbing and it is an occasional noise...it has been on a rack....much tightning and oiling.....has there been a common source that has been identified...the car is relatively new...2008 build ?? Thanks in advance for any clues...

Check the trunk support glide.

I have been having the same issue. An occasional clanking in the right rear, usually at low speed. I too have checked under the car for anything loose or rubbing and have come up with nothing.

I am planning to replace the original shock mounts with the new upgraded Performance Unlimited mounts. I was thinking that might be part of the problem...even if it's not it looks like a good upgrade.

Thanks for the tip about the trunk support Blas. Although it doesn't sound like it is something that lightweight. I will check that tonight.

Got a clunk in the right rear when entering a driveway on a right turn while going anything but dead slow.

Drives me nuts!

when it is not locked up right...but...this sounds like a much thicker gage...more like a clamp ... something loose... I thought for sure it was the rods for the top, about that thickness..... not necessarily on irregular surfaces but under some sort of torsion...I'll check the trunk rub and recheck the bolts on the half shaft and diff. in the morning...annoying..

Take a look and see if there is any contact at all between the trunk and the body of the car. Mine shows a little abrasion between the two surfaces, which causes a little rattle/clunk from time to time. I tried putting a very thin piece of mylar between the surfaces and it helped.

The other thing that you might want to look at is the sway bar mounts. Mine were make some noise and per Madmaxx's suggestion, I unbolted them and applied some dielectric grease and the noise went away.

May not explain the clanking noise, but a couple of things to look at.

Make sure all the bolts on the differential housing are tight.

You might want to also check the bolts on the half shaft. Some people have experienced issues with bolts coming loose.

I have a similar clanking noise, but I believe it's my seat belt latch on the eye bolt behind the seat. I hear it when I come to a stop or move around in my seat. A metal to metal clanking sound.

Could be the old E-brake calipers. They make noise on bumps, etc. on my SPF.

Have you inspected your drive shaft hoop? Maybe look for a rub mark. And how about your rear sway bar connections, are the rubber pieces secure. You car is quite new so I would guess they are fine...With the rear wheels off the ground, is there any side to side movement of the tire and rim? That could be caused by a loose wheel hub or axle nut(s) Brake calipers mounting bolts tight? Spinner tight? Do you have the newer parking brake desigen? Does it work well? If not, maybe a loose brake pad or PB pad? All things to check if you have not yet.

Check your rear upright I had bearing outer race spin in the housing.Look for any metal on inside of rear wheel by cv joint.

Last night I checked the trunk support strut...several of the bolts were not quite tight...maybe needed only half a turn to tighten them up. So that wasn't the problem.
Tonight I will try to check inside the cv joint for metal and the differential housing for any loose bolts.

Bartruff, I know it's not the top rods because they aren't in the trunk and haven't been since I bought the car.

Blas, I have checked the drive line hoop and there's no sign of any rubbing or anything hitting it. I previously tightened up the parking brake cable (it now holds) so it is not the cable hitting somewhere.

And so it goes...the mystery continues.

Some of these cars just make noises regularly.

Creaks, clunks, squeaks, clanks. As long as nothing is falling off, I will learn to live with ithem.

Now that I am reasonable sure it is just a noise and not a hazard, the noise is more tolerable...

I would not overlook any unknown noise especially when making a left or a right turn and you hear a rubbing or metal to metal sound.I would also check the inside of your disc break rotor for any metal wear.When my bearing outer race spun inside my upright I noticed a grinding sound when I put stress on that area.Superformance made good on a new upright and a new style of bearing.

I guess it's just me, but I find it really annoying. Especially the part about not knowing what is making it. To my mind it's not a sound that I should be hearing.

Strange as this might sound, you might want to check the roll bar mounts and the fuel tank mounting.

Just a suggestion.

Mine makes the same noises and I have tightened everything there is and nothing was really loose. It is a light car and when you go over bumps and such, things move and clank.

If you ever listen to a Cup car going down pit lane they make the same noises. Certainly check everything but my advice would not to be to upset or worrided about it. It is not a cadillac or new corvette, it is going to make some noises and things will leak, it's all part of the experience.

On my SPF the Right Rear nut that holds the wheel assembly on bottomed out and was not tightened down completely. That cauesd a noise that I didnt notice for some time due to how loud the car is. I had to take it down the road and shut it down at speed to get a better feel for where the noise was coming from. Anyway, when the car is jacked up there was movement in the wheel when I shook it by placing my hands on the top and bottom of the tire.

turns out the wheel assbly was defective and they sent me a new one. All good now.

Another thing to inspect...
