Bright bulbs for rectangular tail lights

QI bulbs worried me a bit because they are so hot, and these are pretty high wattage (50W/15W), so I tested them in the fixtures. No problem.
These are very bright, so you will never have a "dim bulb" problem again.

How do they compare, brightness-wise, to these guys? LED Upgrade to Rear Rectangular Lights

Bob ... when you tested them in your fixtures , how long did you run them at each wattage ? Seems like a great upgrade without going to the LED units .

They may not be quite as bright as the LEDs, but it's hard to tell. All I can say is they are much brighter than stock. These Q.I. bulbs won't have a problem with the taillight relay either.

Yes, I even kept the bright filament lit for about 15 minutes without a problem. The lens gets hot, but not near the melting point of the plastic. Leaving the parking lights on for an extended period will definitely not do any damage.

For those with non-ERAs, be aware that our bulb mount hangs out in the trunk area so that there's plenty of air circulation. Even with our reflector installed, there's nice airflow.

Bob, great tip and thanks for including the link. I just ordered a pair and will give them a try. I've some polished aluminum sheet that I plan to make into reflectors for behind the bulbs, as well (keeping in mind the need for airflow).

About 6 weeks ago I had to replace a Ron Francis Bright Bulb. When I called them, I asked if the LED unit that Patrick is recommending, (which they also sell) was brighter than the unit I was going to purchse. The sales clerk had to go ask someone. When he returned, he said "We don't know". I bought the incandescent bulb.

I'd still like to know which is brighter. My red car with red tail lights may still not be contrasty enough in some sunny situations.

Installed the bulbs Bob recommended, and they are quite a bit brighter as evidenced in the attached photo.

The Eiko 1157 is on the right, and I made sure that I was centered between the lights while taking the photo. The difference you see is the brightness, not due to any angle differences.

Wow! 50 watt... These are double the wattage of the traditional bulb. I'm sure these will not go unnoticed when you hit the brakes or indicate your intention to make a turn.

I used LED's and just added a load resistor. Amazon has the resistors for $7.

I used the LEDs, swapped to an electronic flasher relay and painted the inside of the housing bright white.

You can also use the metal duct tape rather than painting the inside of the housing. The metal duct tape is almost mirror like.

Every place that I've found refers to the bulbs as "H4". Make sure that they are Halogen and 50/15W.
