I had a 460 in a 79 F150 years ago and I had the same issues. Would not crank hot. High torque or regular started did not matter. A new starter would work well for a while, but did not take long for it to act up again. I tried heat wrap on the starter and header but what I found to work the best was to make a double aluminum shield to fit between the header and starter. Meaning that there were 2 shields with a air gap between them. I also installed small 12 volt fan to blow air across the shield and starter. Was not the prettiest setup, but it helped a lot. I still had a few issues with it, but not every time. Hopefully someone else can weigh in and have a better solution. I had other issues with that 460 and ended up seizing it up before I found a better solution.
