Default Older EM chassis

I have an older E.M. kit that I am working on. I have talked to E.M. in the past with little sucess. I have a question for anyone that might know.

On the front of the chassis the main tubes end at the cross member. Off the the front of the end of the main tubes there are 1.5x3(+/-) square tubiing coming off of that going forward. At the end of those square tubes are some mounting plates. Some that come off the front and go towards the outside of the chassis ( I am assuming bumper or jack lift mounts) The other tabs come off and go in and back with two holes top and bottom about 2 inches apart.

I first thought radiator mount...but when I look back up the square tubing there and 2 holes with nut sets that are at an angle. I am assuming those holes are for mounting the radiator...what are the other tabs for? I will try to get a clear picture of it tonight and post it in the gallery...maybe someone out there will know...lol.

My radiator is mounted with 3 bolts angled back. Right in front of the 4" round. The two bolts you are talking about seem to be body mounts. Heck I took a picture for you.

I am also working on an old EM. Maybe we can compare notes. I looked at my chassis and I think the brackets you are referring to mount an antisway bar, I am guessing off of the Mustang II front end.

Found your photos. Looks exactly like my frame. Sway bar bolts to the bracket. Radiator mounts to bracket bolted to the two angled boltholes you refer to. It was like that when I got it. Hope this helps.

Hey WaylanG, had a long conversation with Ralphy on the phone last week..very nice guy and very helpful. That is where the anti-sway bar mounts...untill I saw the pics of Ralphy's car I couldnt for the life of me figure out what those were for. I dont think Im going to run the bar so I may do away with those brackets to make a little more room for a bigger radiator. I appreciate the reply...are you done with your car?

Sad to say, I am a long way from being through with the car. Still needs brakes, steering and electrical to be on the street. Too many projects and not enough time. Looks like my kit is the same vintage as yours from the pictures if I can be of any help. It was partially completed when I bought it.

zlink...

You are correct in your assumptions; flat plates are to be drilled to accomodate bumper (or jacklifts) and the two holes on either side (on the angle) are for the radiator support.

I can copy/email pictures from the assembly manual if you need them...

I think between the 3 now 4 of us we got it figured out. I have made alot of changes to alot of things on this chassis....it's just sometimes you need to know what they intended something to be used for.

Thanks Dan

OK, let me ask here. What style of rack and pinions do you all have? I am replacing mine, and I am looking to use a short shaft MII. Made by Flaming River. I think the long shaft will wear out faster, due to the universal putting side load on it. Also I can bring the assy closer to the frame. The unit I have now appears to be a 75 era Pinto with three mounting bolts similar to the MII.

i dont think side load is too much of a problem as long as you arent bearing down it while your sitting still. The shaft takes up most of the side load I would think but I could be wrong. I had toyed with the idea of putting in a hydraulic steering system like they run on fork lifts...but they say they arent street legal.
